Armory. thegca.org/2019-gca-convention/I have a Post WWII Springfield that I do not believe was ever issued, when I got it from the CMP, I about had a heart attack as I dissembled it, all the parts were correct, the only imperfections were from the knob dings from other rifles when they shifted in the crates...no chamber evidence of any action other than testing. The pictures do not show it, but the handguards match perfectly...looks like it came form the same block of wood.
John Garand knew how to build a quality rifle...and as Patton said: If not the greatest, right up there with them...the Allies had an advantage with this rifle. My Harrington and Richardson is a great shooter, the flyer at the south end of the target was a flinch on my part...I have astigmatism in my right eye so I shoot as a lefty, although I am right handed. I would like to go to the convention, but we will have to see...I sure wan't be taking any guns to Massachusetts, once the heart of firearms innovation for several years though...their attitude has changed.

Nice groupings lefty When I was a NRA member, and belonged to a gun club out in the Angeles National Forrest area (actually Department of Water and Power land), we shot a number of DCM shoots. After a number of qualifying rounds, you could then send in your marks, application, and a nominal amount of money for your M1 Garand. Its a heck of a piece, shooting 30-06 rounds from an eight round clip. Once dialed-in, the groupings are remarkable. Even better if you reload your own rounds and float a up to date barrel (I didn't, but some others in the club did, and they were totally awesome). Glad you're enjoying yours Charlie!

I have everything to reload other than the projectiles...My garage needs to be cleaned out before that will ever happen, but it is on the roster. I understand competitive shooters bedding the stock and all of that, but I don't ever intend to compete, and I feel like I would be messing with John Garand's artwork...Stock, it still shoots better than I can, I am the only variable it seems. I hope to stretch it out though, a buddy of mine that has a literal armory just bought a high tech camera and computer that makes a bench scope obsolete, so I hope to stretch things out soon. He has a .338 lapua with close to 8K invested in it...he buys CNC machined projectiles.

You have a safe run over to Show Low tomorrow Charlie!

Thanks, I try to keep it between the guardrails! I am not going the salt river canyon route, I will be grossing 80 with a set of doubles....getting sissy in my old age, taking the 260. Unlike the owner operators, I am paid by the hour, not the mile...and 260 is more conducive to pipe smoking.

Charlie, I am going to have to ride that road on the trike!
I picked up a Garand at the Downtown Houston Woolworth many years ago for $35. It wasn't pretty, but it was functional. This was before gunsmithing school. I didn't have a clue about that rifle. If I'd known that it took special ammo I might have kept it, but it was just too nasty with hunting ammo. I wish I had it back now of course. Back then Mausers were $18.

Certainly the good old days! You can shoot the full pressure 30.06 with an inexpensive gas check to bleed of the gas, or you chance ruining the op rod, not sure that was an option in the days of the $35 Garand though.
I could have bought a Thompson MG for $500 back in 1980... at the time I thought that was highway robbery, that same gun is now about 20k.
Regrets... I have a few.

Super nice rifle ... too bad you missed that quarter on every shot though. Lol That whole 60 / 260 canyon to rim ride is fantastically beautiful. wish you could have time to stop in for a smoke on the porch here!

I love my Garand. It's a January 1944 issue. I've built it back to almost serial correct. I even found a correct George A. Woody cartouche marked stock and the proper sights for her. The only thing not correct is that the op-rod is cut, but serial correct, and the barrel. It's a 1955 issue that measured from the CMP at 0 and 1. It was not about to change out the barrel with those specs. I am still trying to find a proper barrel that is not shot out, but after years of trying, I rarely remember to actively go searching for it. If you come across a January 1944 barrel that is not shot out, please PM me!
I eventually want to get a Winchester Garand, but money has to currently be directed to other projects. Such is life. Have fun and take LOTS of pictures.

I really enjoy the Salt River Canyon route, having ridden or driven it for 50 years now. ;-) With my folks living up in Show Low, I tend to get an opportunity to drive that route at least once or twice every year or so. It can be a beat down though when folks are either creeping along or ridin yer arse. :-( Love the M-1 by the way. Shot my first one while in bootcamp back in 1981.

Nice rifle Charlie. I've always had a soft spot for the Garand, the epitome of what an infantry rifle should look like. But the M-14 is close. We were issued M-1s when I was in infantry training in Camp Lejeune these many years ago so we didn't bash up M-14s. Good friend of mine was on the USMC international shooting team back then, and when we get together, at age 70, he can still hit milk bottles 75% of his shots at a hundred yards off hand with his M-1. I get him at trap though, he can't hit clay birds for crap.

Wow...so you would be the man that shot George Washington? You are a scoundrel!
I spoke to a Vietnam vet that served as a Marine, he said that by and far the M-14 was his rifle of preference, the .308 really allowed him to reach out, and the gun he issued was flawless unlike the issues they had with the M-16's thanks to the Whiz kids in Washington...but that is another story.
That...is a great pic.
That goes back a few years.

Don't worry, you can get a new one for $2100 from Fulton Armory. Only a 3 month waiting list.
