I live in a small town and from my experience, I’ve only seen one other pipe smoker in town, dirty Dave. Dave is a bit of a drifter and is often seen walking around town with a cob full of half and half. I’ve tried to talk with him but he’s not very social.
Today I was at the market getting stuff for New Years Eve and a nice Jeep pulled into a spot next to me and I got a wonderful aroma of vanilla pipe tobacco. I walked to the front of the truck and there was a man puffing on what looked to be a Peterson pipe with a wonderfully aromatic pipe tobacco wafting out of the window of his driver seat. I was hoping he would get out of the car so I could talk to him but it didn’t happen. It was pretty cool to see an old timer enjoying his pipe in his car on the way to the market though. I wish I had a pipe in the car just to join him even if it was from a distance.
Something about it brings us together.

I always smile when I encounter another pipe-smoker, which is a rare happenstance these days.

It is encouraging to see fellow pipe smokers out and about. My take is if you make eye contact hoist a bowl and give a thumbs up and play it by ear.
Some long term pipe smokers are quite different than the forum member and pipe club attendee...they smoke a pipe and that is where it begins, and ends.
I have approached people buying pipe tobacco at the shop where our pipe club meets, and the responses have been all over the map, from enthusiastic, to vibes that feel like " Get lost, scumbag" I have seen the same response to a fellow member of our pipe club that did the same. Typically, face to face greetings go nowhere, social media and forums get attention....go figure.

In another post less than two months ago I wrote about a similar story. I pulled into Lowe’s Foods parking lot and parked next to an older gentleman enjoying a pipe. He looked over towards me and saw I was also enjoying a pipe. So I decided to nod my head and wave, he turned his head and ignored me. That was odd for a fellow pipe smoker. Guess there is a first time for everything!!

I’ve seen families out to dinner with themselves and they are not taking, they are texting. This virtual world is great but lacks in the humane aspect of relationship building outside of it it seems. That said, I would gladly pack, light and hoist a pipe with everyone here !

It's very satisfying. Like when I was a kid and I'd see someone wearing a shirt of my favourite band. Especially living in a small town.

Your response was similar as you posted above, I remember your story. I’ve come to the conclusion....some people are strange!

Jim Morrison had a few things to say about people being strange, Ted...... Earlier, I said: Just to clarify....When they have acted enthusiastic, they never came over to join in...without exception. Social Media and forums are mediums that connect pipe smokers that are really into the hobby.

Other than Josh, I haven't seen a pipe smoker in this town..correction, I remember a security guard at the State building I worked in...he had a bent bulldog that had seen better days...I gave him some 5100 to smoke, he thanked me, but I never saw him again (the McClellands may have knock him out, he was smoking Carter Hall at the time I saw him). That was the one time I saw a pipe smoker...never after and never before and I have lived here for over 25 years.

Here in the SF Bay Area, sometimes I see one guy riding around in an old WWII jeep smoking a pipe.

Strange Thing..The few pipe smokers I've met lately didn't really want to talk about pipe smoking. They want to talk about something else.I remember one fella who only wanted to talk about a car he was restoring..About the strangest one was a fella who told me how much he liked his pipe. Then I noticed the stem was taped in with electrical tape.

I remember Jim when he dropped his pants just a bit to let his wanger hang out in Miami...just my luck that I had about 100 students from the school I taught at with me. Course they had it on the front page of the Miami Herald...just for me, eyes glowing red.

A few months back, I had parked my car and was walking towards the entrance to Safeways to pick-up a few items, wherein I'd noticed a gentleman in his 70', blue jeans, button down shirt, and suspenders, putting a match (or attempting to with the slight breeze). I went up to him and said "that smells pretty good. What ya smoking in that pipe?" He'd mentioned that it was one of the inexpensive brands they sell down at the "Smoke Shop" in Bend (I believe it was OHM or Smokers Pride. Something in that neighborhood). We talked briefly and about online tobacco', which he was aware of, but appeared to be satisfied with his brand and the price. We both said goodbye and parted ways (I think he was also waiting for his wife to complete her shopping). Then, I was returning from a shuttle run at the airport, and while walking to the terminal, I'd noticed an airport worker standing near the "smoking area" with a pipe. He had finished and was returning to the same entrance. I said "I noticed you were smoking a pipe, and what type of pipe do you have there?" He mentioned that it was a small meerschaum a friend had given to him, along with some Borkum Riff. He was enjoying the pipe and trying to rid himself of cigarettes. Again, it was a brief interface and we said goodbye and departed to our work areas. Scott W Hey Scott, next time just mosey on over and ask what're smoking. You can always say that you smoke a pipe too. You never know In another post less than two months ago I wrote about a similar story. Good stories.. There was a time where half the pipe smokers I knew were a bit antisocial and estranged. They had their way of seeing things, kept to a few fellow travelers and did not appear to care for much else. As the years went by, traveling here and there, I noticed more open, considerate pipe smokers. It just goes to show you sometimes we simply find ourselves in rooms full of wearisome people.

I admit to being much more social online than in person.
I am not rude to anyone. In fact, I'm quite courteous to anyone who is not unfriendly. But, at the same time, I try to keep to myself as much as possible.
I nearly always have a pipe in my mouth. But that's because I like smoking pipes, not because I want to socialize. 😀

Very nice......😘😘😘......lol
All jokes aside, this “ gentleman “ was the one that was looking towards me. After I picked up a few items and went back to my car he was still puffing away. I have excellent peripheral vision, he watched me re-light my pipe. I just drove away. It was kind of weird!

Last Christmas I saw two pipe smokers in the same day. Since then I've only seen 1 pipe smoker. In all cases they were in their cars as I was driving past so there was no interaction. But, as Scott W mentioned, I still felt some kind of connection with them. That's probably just in my mind, but still...

Everyone I knew that smoked a pipe is gone and 30 years ago there were a bunch of them. The strangest reaction I got was in NYC while smoking a pipe. Got a lot of strange looks like I was smoking something other than tobacco.

Back when you were permitted to smoke in parks, if people noticed I was smoking a cigar, they would go out of there way to avoid me. When smoking a pipe, they’d walk past, some with pleasant remarks.

I cannot remember the last time I spotted another pipe smoker. 30+ years?
In the early 1970s, I worked a job with several on my shift. They ranged from guys in their late 20s to one old German in his 60s, a veteran of the Kriegsmarine.

To be fair, where you live, I get the impression that you can get away without spotting another person for days at a time, if you wanted to.

I’ve only seen one pipe smoker out in public in the last 5 years. I was pulling out of a grocery store parking lot and he had just walked across the lot and was about to enter the store after putting his pipe in a pocket. If I hadn’t had someone with me & had other chores to do, I woulda parked and gone in to talk with the fellow. - -

If you were there this past October you could have been given a summons to appear. You didn’t notice any signs? I use to enjoy a great lunch behind the Fifth Ave. Library, there was a great restaurant overlooking Bryant Park. After lunch another coffee with a good cigar. Those days have long gone. Near Macy’s in Hearld Square, NYC there is no smoking permitted. Usually an officer of the law will give you a verbal warning. HAVE A HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR 🎉🎊🎈🎉🎊🎈🎉🎊🎈

I just got back from the store and they are redoing the road at an intersection next to it and that's where I saw the pipe smoker. He looked like the foreman of the crew and he had a st. billiard stuck in his mouth with smoke coming from the bowl. While stopped at the intersection I watched him puff away while watching his crew. He's the first pipe smoker I've seen in several years.
