The balls dropped over half a century ago, and so I have no need to watch. I can't remember the last time I watched the tele on NYE. I spent a very pleasant and hilarious evening with friends over salad and fondue. The off home after midnight.
Different strokes for different folks. It's all good.

Not much interested in the New Years hoopla.
I watched old movies. "Titantic", 1953, and "Double Indemnity", 1944. I live in the past.
I feel you. On average, about three-quarters of the movies I watch in a month are in black and white.

How can you not get excited when watching live action like this! Who would have ever thought that Idaho would outshine New York at its own game! 😁

with the majority on this topic. Back in Dick Clark days, enjoyed the final hour. Last couple yrs...screeching, hollering etc called "singing". Wifie changed over around 11:45, no big deal. Went back to chat till everybody else gone. As to the "coochie grabbing...Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Aguilarra..late Michael Jackson. Would rather travel to Montreal & see some "real" stuff as here: vk.com/video21316135_167818892dirty old men....... Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY

New Years eve hasn't been good for me since Steve Allen stopped doing it. If it were "good" I wouldn't watch it. Tune in for the "bad," stay for the "awful."
Remember when Miriah Carey's sound system didn't work, and she just stood there in silence while the backing track continued? Great moments in television, gents.

Same old, same old. For decades now, the older folks can't stand what the younger generation calls entertainment. That has been the situation for as long as the annual ball drop has been around. Those youngsters partying in Times Square last night will do the same when their kids and grandkids are watching the ball drop.

But old folks complaining about the kids' entertainment will still be going strong.

Went to bed around 9pm.. curtain closed on just another day. It may as well have been April fools day without a joke.

I only tune-in for the last 5 minutes before the ball drops. The rest of it doesn't appeal to me at all.

Cheers to that. There are two things that get me riley these days: Scientology and the shite that cable companies shovel expecting you to lap it up.

Wife and I have been under the weather for a week, slowly getting better. My Daughter and her family were in New York for the Ball drop. I tried to watch the drivel they called entertainment, told the wife with a million people we surley won’t catch a glimpse of them. Boy have our standards dropped. Finally I told wife if you want to watch this crap I’ll go in the living room and watch something else. No she said this is awful. Thank God Amazon Streaming BBC Shows came to the rescue,. Twilight zone all day and night is our new years eve and day tradition..

I think the people that enjoy that kind of thing just really like feeling like part of a crowd. To a lesser extent, that's all pop culture in a shell. I've always been a jaded, humbug, wallflower myself. Haha

It is a time honored tradition of humans to denigrate practices we don't partake in personally. I think of it as generational warfare when it is aimed at a practices that are either new or old. It really boils down to "*this* is/was good for me so why do you need *that*?"
Truth is we need all of it because *someone* finds it useful. Someone watched those festivities and had a great time. I think we should be grateful that people are still finding ways to enjoy life. No matter what our ages, I hope we are all so lucky.
That being said, as for music, time has a way of creating a false sense of quality from historical music. Over time, musical experiments and trends that are found unpalatable or unworthy are set aside and forgotten in favor of more talented, more creative, and often more lucky artists. For every Paganini, there are thousands of New Kids on the Block. For every Jazz there are hundreds of other genres that never took off.
Creativity is a process that doesn't deal in failures or successes, only in growth.

I'm a total music geek and while I admit it's really cool listening to a heavy band and then realizing they're from the 60s and years before their time... Originality is very impressive to someone who writes and plays music regularly. 'Shoulders of Giants' and all that. But it pisses me off when I show a handful of new bands that essentially do Sabbath as well as Sabbath ever did (arguably) to a fan and they're mind is too closed to give it chance because it isn't old cannon. Of course part of that all is that some people just don't care. Haha They have their 30 classic rock albums and that's enough to provide their background noise throughout life. No desire to expand. Sad, but okay.

Sad, but okay. Some people do have really narrow attention when it comes to music but we're all guilty of being narrow somehow 😁 I feel you on the music front though. I often get smart assed comments at work because of the music I play. My particular taste in music is what I haven't heard before. I will listen to music from around the world in languages I don't understand, bands I've never heard of, random no name bands on YouTube (the less subscribers the more likely I'll listen!), Etc.. most of it isn't very good technically, but the more foreign the sounds are to my ears, the more I like it. Sure I've got my stand bys for times I want to listen to something I know, but they range from Metallica to Ani DiFranco to Puccini, Kenney Chesney, Tupac, and beyond. I just really try to see the joy and pleasure life has to offer, wherever it is my eyes happen to fall.
