Grabbed this one in a cigarbid cart to see if whiskey topped blends are to my liking (after all I do love whisky(ey)).
Decent pouch note but I don't really pick up bourbon in it. Not too wet with decent ribbons from light to dark.
Packed well and swelled up like me over the holidays on the charring light. Tamped it back down and it took a bit to get it going. More relights than average on this one for me.
Every now and then it would deliver some decent flavors but nothing really jumped out at me with this one. Kind of had a cheap taste to it for a lack of a better term. I varied my cadence to try to find the sweet spot and simply got bland, harsh, cheap tobacco flavor.
Beard note was pretty good but kind of an artificial twinge to it. Wish those flavors were more prevalent while smoking it.
Going to give this one a few more tries but it is not making a valid run for my rotation so far.

Andy,
thanks for the review. Borkum Riff Bourbon was the only thing I smoked for the better part of 30 year, albeit only 5 or 6 times a year.
In the end it's really just another inexpensive OTC (Over the Counter) offering that is mass produced for the Masses. ;-)
I'm not at all trying to downplay BR. I still have a couple of pouches of it in the mancave and smoke it from time to time in my oldest/original pipe, kinda like a stroll down memory lane ;-)...
Don't know if you've tried Carter Hall yet, but it is also an OTC blend that is readily available at most all retailers that sell any pipe tobacco at all.
As far as inexpensive OTC blends go, I prefer Carter Hall & Prince Albert. Borkum Riff & Captan Black are a couple of others that I keep around for the occasional stroll down memory lane.
Happy piping

Haven't had CH or PA but have had Captain Black original. It would scratch the itch for me if need be but I have some pretty good B&M's near me and keep a healthy supply of 1Q on hand so don't need to hit the OTC market. Just happened to grab a pouch for cheap and decided to try it.
I will definitely report back after a few more bowls of it to give it its fair due.

The beard note is usually great with blends like this. I felt the same way about Creme de Casis...not much taste, but every time I breathed in through my nose, the smell of my moustache was amazing.

Also, I just don't think of cherry's when I think of pipe tobacco. I am sure some will chime in with the likes of cult blood red and the such, and I am sure they are great and that one day I will give in and try them and probably even like them. But for me when I start jonesing for a bowl of something cherries are far from on my mind.

BRM is certainly the best of the bunch.

Looking forward to trying that.

In one post I had someone recommended mixing in some lane 1Q and it helped for me at least to get a better smoke. I am also brand new to pipes and BR bourbon whiskey was the first pouch I got.

I got some cherry from a local b&m store, and didn't like it very much. I mixed it 3 to 1 with Lane BCA, (3 of the Lane) and it's now a pretty decent smoke. But I won't buy any more.

The new version is better than the one I smoked back in the early 1970. It has a little deeper flavor, and less chance of bite.

Now, is that a ringing endorsement, or what?! Jim, how was that smoke in 1970?
I still have bad memories of whatever BR I tried in 1965 or so.

A friend in the Army, many years ago, smoked nothing but Borkum Riff Bourbon. I tried it but was never able to smoke much of it. It was too rough on my throat.
