I bought a lot of 4 pipes, which I don't do very often. This one stumps me. I have never heard about Vottis pipes, just that they were made by Pat M. Vottis from New York state between the 1940s and 1970s. An early carver using Danish styles for some of his pipes. That's about it. First let me say that this is an odd looking pipe in my opinion. It's not terrible, but just kinda off. The construction is bewildering as it seems to be made from two pieces of briar pieced together in a strange way. It appears that the front bottom part of the bowl was glued? on with some fairly decent matching of the grain. At first I thought it was a scratch or crack, but no, it forms a sort of circle around the bottom of the bowl. Seems like a lot of work, but the finish work suffers some. Lots of sanding scratches! Then there's the chamber position. I can see why it was made like this as you didn't want to have the added piece being part of the chamber, but it adds to the oddness of the look of the pipe. Lastly, there's the handle? a loop between the bowl and the shank. I'm not sure it serves any purpose, but it's not even stained inside. I'm not bashing the creator of this pipe, I just find it to be one of the oddest pipes I've seen. Check out the pics and tell me what you think.

That is a really strange pipe. Maybe it was their very first effort? 😁

I might be wrong but I think it's supposed to look like a handgun.

It is odd. And that back chamber wall is pretty thin.

A mystery wrapped in an enigma, enclosed........ Well, I agree, it has 3-4 major oddities! The bottom of the bowl- can you see the joining in the chamber?

It is odd. And that back chamber wall is pretty thin. That would make me think this pipe was not very well thought out.

I might be wrong but I think it's supposed to look like a handgun. now you mention it, that makes prefect sense. Doesn't explain the bowl position though.

(Or turn the image upside down if you have computer skills.) The bowl would be the grip.... I know I am old school, but a gun should look like a gun, and a pipe should look like a pipe. It is interesting, though.......

It’s a bit odd, most likely some “ new artisan pipe “ with an odd piece of decent briar he did not want to waste any!?!?!? My concern would be the rear chamber wall being to thin.
Definitely not my “ cup of tea “!

I might be wrong but I think it's supposed to look like a handgun. I think you’ve got something there, and some lover of “ odd “ pipes pulled “ the trigger “.

Whats that cut line that goes oblicqly around the lower part of the bowl? Other than that it looks like all the rest of the "Artison" pipes I've seen, not a pipe looking at all !
