I had a nightmare last night that I saved and had massive, fatty jowls. 😂 I often dream that I have hair. When I wake I'm so relieved. I often dream I have two legs. And afternoon morning wood.

I used ivory soap for years, with disposable bic razors. I like the feel of the safety razor though, and if you can find a soap with a moisturizer that would help smooth the ride.

I never imagined you could get so many great stories on a subject of shave soap. Very nice.

I never imagined you could get so many great stories on a subject of shave soap. Very nice. For an endless supply of shaving soap stories, go to Badgerandblade.com, a wet shaving forum. Those folks are as fanatical about shaving as we are of smoking pipes, maybe more so. They also have a smoking sub-forum, The Brown Leaf. They were the driving force in my taking back up the pipe.

Don't laugh, but the cheapest source for quality shaving soap is the Vermont Country Store mail-order catalogue. They specialise in old time products for the elderly, and they carry a lot of forgotten brands and things that you just don't find at Wal-mart anymore.
I can endorse their shave soaps as being perfectly adequate.
For my own lot, I prefer Proraso shave cream. It comes in a tube, like toothpaste, and you whip it into a proper foam pretty quick. It's faster and less effort than shave soap, but less astringent than canned shaving creams.

Proraso in the plastic cup. I used to buy the tube, but the cup is easier IMO.
I have a foot long beard, but I still trim and shave my head with a safety razor.
For the beard, I use coal tar, then Honest Amish beard balm.

Has no one recommended Arko? I've got a ton of shaving soaps from Barrister & Mann, Fine, RazoRock, Sterling, who knows how many artisans, but Arko is a cheap tallow based soap that lathers easily, provides an excellent shave, and can be had for a few dollars on Amazon. Definitely worth picking up

Definitely worth picking up Arko works well, but I can’t stand the smell. My favorite is Mitchell’s Wool Fat. Just like pipes and baccy, lots to try and everyone’s different in preferences.

LOL I've heard that, like Tabac, the smell is either love or hate. It reminds me of lemon Pledge, but in a good way. I like the Fat, but there are so many tallow based soaps, that, IMHO, lather just as well as MWF, cost less, and smell better

I have a full beard now but other times of year shave my face and then always shave my head year round. I used to have a rotation of shave soaps and creams all of which I apply with a brush. Through the years I have whittled it down to 2 products from both a performance and pleasure (scent) standpoint. Those 2 are proraso cream (also sold under the C.O. Bigelow brand) and Tabac shave soap. Proraso is my in the shower and/or travel product of choice as I don't need the brush to use it effectively. Nice eucalyptus scent that leaves me feeling fresh. Tabac is my at the sink product of choice as it performs outstanding and I LOVE the scent. It would be well received by pipers. Both available on amazon as well as many other online retailers.

For the beard, I use coal tar, then Honest Amish beard balm. Not sure about coal tar, but Honest Amish makes quality natural products. I use their beard wax. 👍

I use their beard wax. 👍 My grandfather put me onto coal tar years ago. It's basically a type of anti-dandruff shampoo. In the shower, I clean my beard with a natural soap, then apply the coal tar in my beard and on my freshly shaven scalp. Afterwards, I apply the amish conditioner on beard and scalp.....and yeah, it is a great product.

Only when bored do I take out the carving tools and have a go at the soap.😁
