For reasons that are non germane to this thread, I find myself with a lot of spare time and little to do. When this happens I, at times, come up with rather silly things to pass said time. Today, for some reason, the question of "what did Bing smoke before he started smoking Bings?" came to mind. Not sure why as I not really a fan. Don't think I have ever watched a movie of his and besides White Christmas couldn't name any of his songs. Nonetheless I under took the task of answering that question.
One would think that finding a picture of Bing smoking a pipe would be easy. It sort of is. Finding pictures that can be dated to a specific year and is not one that been used more than once is kind of difficult. It took me over an hour to find 16 These photos, from the 1930s thru the 1950s, were found on the following items:
7 pieces of sheet music 3 publicity photos 3 movie photos 2 press photos 1 advertisement (not pipe related)
The pipes were as follows:
6 Canadians 5 Billiards 3 Bulldogs 1 Pot 1 4 panel Billiard
I found many other pictures of Bing smoking a pipe that could not be placed in a specific year. Interestingly, I could not find a single photo of him smoking a bent pipe.
For those wondering why I only used photos that could be dated to a specific year, I was curious as to what decade the most pictures of him with a pipe appeared. Turned out to be the 1940s.

My assortment of pipes encompasses similar ratios of those styles. Maybe more billiards than Canadians.

That about covers what I recall Bing smoking, or I should say have seen pictures of. Would be very interesting to know how and why he started smoking the "Bing" shape. I suppose that info is lost forever though.
I did hear a story (don't ask me where) that he started smoking the Lumberman shape because it was popular among workers in the lumber trade, which was very active in Tacoma, WA where he grew up. I'm not sure how accurate this is though.
My thought on that choice of pipe and eventually the Bing was that the length would not interfere with a clear shot of his face. Considering his popularity, one would think that you wouldn't want your mug mucked up with a big old pipe square in the middle.

Due to the fact that I spent many years doing historical research, I am well aware that unless there are some facts to back up a story, it can never be more than a story. With that in mind, I did read somewhere that Bing met Merchant and learned about the "Special" from him. Bing was interested in the design and was given or sent one by Merchant. Will try to remember where I saw that.
