Quite often I post here late at night. It seems easier then to make a mistake. Now and then I notice one in the morning that I made the night before. I've been on forums where folks were quick to point that out..Not so here..For example..Once on another forum I said that I was drinking coffee in a cup.The next morning several folks wanted to know how I got in the cup..I guest we all make typos on occasion..Folks here are polite enough to not to make an issue of it..Another quality of the folks on this forum. Thank You

No one here minds if you're dangling your participles. By the way, has anyone seen my modifiers? I seem to have misplaced them.

Larry, this is the ONLY forum that I have ever been part of where members donβt jump on you for typos. People here are much more courteous and thoughtful. Great place to hang outπππ
Even though Iβm up most of the night Iβm trying to keep my post count down, so I no longer post much after midnight.

I don't correct typos when I see them, even though I can (unless asked by the poster).
Sometimes there are some typos that are funny and i have gone for the joke, but never maliciously.
However, if I've ever annoyed anyone by doing that I'm terribly sorry.
I need to be careful in future.

The one thing more annoying to me than bad grammar is the self-appointed grammar police. We are all perfectly capable of typos, grammatical slips, and poor usage. So I'm glad this is a place where people don't take themselves too seriously grammar wise. I may get snippy on other issues, but hardly ever on grammar related stuff.

I'm an English guy. I got my BA in English and am certified to teach 5-12 grade. I've worked as a writing tutor, a copyeditor, and a reader for a literary journal.
Nothing irritates me more than when people are jerks about grammar & usage online. There's such a thing as genre, and the genre of forum posts does not require perfect (or even good) grammar.

I studied Latin for two years. It probably taught me more about English than I would have ever learned studying the latter. Significant historical documents are loaded with grammatical imperfections. Nobody busted a gut about it then, little reason to now.

The only time I'm irked with grammar is hearing or even reading things from my in-laws.
"I b shoppin fo christmas and people be cray cray."
"Scott, you went to college, let me ax you sumtin?"
Thank god my wife is the black sheep of her family.

Being dyslexic and having to go to remedial English classes helped me to better understand sentence structure etc. However, there is no need to enforce this on other people.

We probably see more malicious auto correct words than actual typos. Winston Churchill on being corrected using prepositions ending sentences: "...this is the sort of nonsense up with which I will not put."

As a writer, certainly I notice typos, in my posts and others... but I think they indicate something of the character of the individual... it provides a bit of color about the author of the post... I enjoy them...

Long time ago a Red Neck friend was studying Cajun French at UL in Lafayette. He coherised me to go one night, taught by an Old Cajun Spinster, I told him to be careful in how he pronounced the word for coat as itβs close to the word for condum, well he screwed up and had to make a sentece in Cajun French in putting on his coat. He gets up and blurts out he put his condum on because it was raining. Imagine the look on the Old Spinsters face, the room Gahawwed, I broke out in a hysterical laughter, I laughed all night, he was not the teachers favorite.!

One of my best friends was a Cajun from LA. He was a bit older than me, but he was good and a true friend. He became ill, and I took care of his injections twice a day for a long time... I loved hearing him talk... nothing like a Cajun accent...

Some folks on other forums are just Assholes, trying to get a laugh at the expense of others, I'm glad we don't have a problem like that on this Forum.

I've moderated on a multiroom forum that was very international in flavour, with about 45% of the members not speaking English as a first language. I'm very used to speaking to people for whom English is a second or third language. It doesn't take much to be forgiving of quirks or errors. Saying that, the level of language usage here in the Patch is very high!
Then again,I'm from, and live in Northern Ireland...as Legend Lover will tell you,our use of English here is...uniqueπ

Studying in England long ago, a friend knocked on the door, piped up, and asked if I had a "rubber he could borrow." After a bit, and when my laughter subsided, I learned that that was Brit for "eraser".
I see a jillion gratuitous apostrophe's, such as "it's" when "its" is meant, and the plural of tobacco written as "tobacco's". But that's not that often here.
And I am hoping the "in a cup" jibe was in fun. It wasn't wrong, as in context, everyone knew what was being said.

A guy named Martin Joos wrote a book several years ago entitled The Five Clocks. He pointed out that language is like clothing, and just as one dresses differently to go to the symphony than to a bar, some adjustment in language is generally expected in different social contexts. I consider a pipe forum a casual place. So deviations from standard formal written English would be expected. Just my two cents' worth here.

When my class entered third grade, the teacher told us we were the first class they were not going teach grammar. Having listened to my two older sisters complain about learning grammar, I thought it was a good deal. I have been a little self conscious of my grammar failings ever since. I believe they reinstated the grammar courses a couple of years later.
