Good adaptation for the cob...looks really good! Thanks. As soon as the pipe mud drys going to load it up and see how it smokes. Also went through my box of broken pipe and found some more that the bowls are cracked. Think I may try some more, this one was fun.

That's a nice wee stem there. How'd you do it?

That's a nice wee stem there. How'd you do it? I cut the shank off the Jobey just before the bowl. Then shaped the end of the shank to be rounded. At that point I modified the hole in the cob bowl to fit it. Then some wood glue and in it went. Once the pipe mud is dried at the bottom of the bowl it will be ready for smoking. 😀

I've admired all the pipes in this thread since it was first started. The latest leather-wrapped ones are cool too!
I'm curious, does anyone notice that wrapping or sealing a cob with stain / varnish changes its smoking characteristics? I'm curious if they breathe less well, don't stay as dry etc?

Can't say that I have ever noticed any sort of degradation of how a cob smokes by the modifications I have made. I have noticed some improvements, but only minor like maybe 10%. Those have usually been related to changes to the shank and bottom of the bowl. 😀

Nope...hasn't made a difference to mine (and I covered mine in spackle and paint)

No, this is an old style MacArthur. It was in a lot of pipes I got with the stem/shank missing, so a perfect candidate for this surgery. Had so much cake I actually had to ream it out to be able to work on it. Will be lighting it up in few.

Honestly I am pleasantly surprised. Having some Castello Fiammata in it. The entire pipe is lighter then I expected, which makes it a perfect for clinching. The draw is just right and it holds large amount of tobacco. So far I would have to say it is a success. 😀

They look great, despite not looking how you had planned. i like the ferrule you've added (is it a ferrule or a ring or a washer??? - you know what I mean).

My latest two modifications. The stain did not come exactly as I was planning, but I learned from it.

I find Elmer's wood glue works very well and has no problem with the heat from the tobacco.😀

My latest two modifications. The stain did not come exactly as I was planning, but I learned from it. Looks terrific and I bet the are great smokers. I'm still waiting for Hobby Lobby to get in the glaze that I use on my cob modifications.
