So I won this from eBay last week, cleaned off the lava, sanded off most of the chatter and bite marks. I've smoked it a few times since and I love it, lightweight, clenches easily, smokes fantastically. But, other than that it's an Astley's with a silver band and twin bored fishtail stem, I don't know anything else about it Anyone who can help me identify it, I'd be very grateful. Also, there are a few bite marks that I simply couldn't get off. I was worried about using 220 grit on the button, and steam didn't work at all. Also, how in the world do I remove char? I know that I could top the bowl, but I'd rather not. If that's the only way, then I'll leave it be .

Check pipedia under british pipe makers. I don't know how to show links but it's in pipedia.

But seriously, I saw that Astley's was a shop, and Charatan, Dunhill, and some of the other British pipemakers made pipes for them. I was wondering if anyone was reminded of any particular pipemaker's style when they saw my pipe. Does the shape, etc, remind you of anything else?

I'd checked out pipedia when I first saw the listing on eBay, then checked a few forums for as much info as I could. The great "bones" are what led me to put in the bid. I can definitely attest to the great smoke that I get from it. I love my GBD and a few other pipes that I've picked up in the last month. But, this one, I have to stop myself from reaching for it with every smoke

The British estates are my favorite pipes....I think that the decades that put so many pipes on the market when there were so many pipe smokers, demanded excellence and thankfully with reasonable care, a well made briar outlasts the original owner. That compels me to take good care of what I have, and hope that it pays smoky dividends after I have left the earthly plane. I have some Sasieni and Charatan seconds that are incredible smokers.

I concur. I've been building up a little collection of pipes from everywhere, a Savinelli (the hype is real), a Polish handmade estate, etc. But, my British and older Americans (Kaywoodie, C.B. Perkins) tend to be my favorites. They're not fancy, no freehands or crazy shapes), but they're all light, streamlined, have elegant shapes, clench easily, are drilled cleanly, and smoke fantastically

Astley's was a tobacconist of considerable repute in London, catering to an upper class audience. I've seen some truly wild Astley's float by on eBay but I haven't got lucky yet. Pipedia has a wild list of purported contract makers of Astley's pipes. Given the flare and joie de vivre I've seen in the eBay pieces, I definitely believe'em. These are some serious pipes. pipedia.org/wiki/Astley%27sI've seen some Astley's that are definitely Charatan's make, just unquestionably in line with the house style. More Charatan than Charatan, sometimes.
Your particular piece doesn't scream Charatan. But I would assume it was made by a British pipemaker of no little repute.
Perhaps the silver hallmarks can shed some light on the maker? Even pipemakers who didn't do their silver in-house typically worked with one or two silversmiths.
