1Q has always been a favorite of mine (although lately it is seeing less and less pipe time. <20%). It does a lot for me. Stupid simple packing and lighting while consistently burning with little to no relights. Good flavor without any artificial flavors from the topping. Pleasing room note for others. Great beard note. Easily available and cheap.
With that said, the one thing 1Q lacks for me is it always leaves me wanting more out of it. Stronger/deeper flavors mainly. I have always seen in reviews that if you like 1Q you should try RLP-6 and that it is 1Q but more. So I picked up a few ounces and had a couple bowls yesterday. Here are my impressions primarily focused on how I like it versus 1Q.
Initial appearances are good with a course cut versus the ribbon cut of 1Q. Good pouch note that is similar to 1Q but more of a chocolate/nutty/nougat in addition to the vanilla. Packed easy, lit easy and stayed lit effortlessly.
From the get go you definitely notice the similarities but you also notice the differences too. The true tobacco flavors are there in the background like 1Q and not overly masked by the topping. Sweet, no bite and mild intensity throughout. As in the tin note you do get more than 1Q in the way of multiple flavors instead of just vanilla. The chocolate/nut/nougat is consistent throughout the bowl and retro-haling is pleasant without any burn and intensifies the flavors. A very pleasant smoke for both the smoker and anyone around as I bet this one would get positive marks by any passer by. I really enjoyed it.
It is more than 1Q but in slightly different ways. It is slightly more flavor but also brings in additional flavors. Not sure how much I want the chocolate/nougat aspect of it. I don't particularly want to smoke a candy bar although I do like a sweet element to be present (but think raw almond sweet not syrup in your latte sweet).
Also, beard note as I have included in most my reviews, is an important aspect to me as I like to continue savoring my smokes well after I have put them down. Most blends I have tried and liked result in me constantly bringing my mustache up to my nose to relish in the ethereal scent. RLP-6 is the exception. Some of the core notes were still there but there was a very artificial off putting note that just wouldn't go away. To the point that I scrubbed my beard with soap to make it go away (rare for me to do unless I just don't want to smell like smoke for a multitude of reasons).
So, I don't think RLP-6 is off the table for me, however, it is going to be tough to load it when 1Q still delivers and so many others in my rotation leave me with such pleasant beard note to enjoy throughout the day. I will hang on to it for fire pits with others around when I don't want to offend and even have folks who don't smoke show interest in what I have.
