When a reviewer talks about tongue bite, are they referring to the sharp burn on the tongue, or other parts of the mouth, that happens when you draw too fast/deep, or the overall feeling on your tongue after smoking a bowl that makes drinking a carbonated drink excruciatingly painful? Since getting back into smoking last August, I have yet to have the former, but many of the tobaccos have given me the latter. If that overall sore tongue is not tongue bite, is there away to avoid it besides letting the tobacco dry a bit?

Good question. I have always taken it to be that sharp feeling similar to burning your tongue on a hot drink. At least, that's what I felt when I first started the pipe.

After 2-3 bowls of Pegasus I've had my tongue feel like I was eating lava. It's one of the few blends that are a no go for me. Haunted Bookshop will do it to me if I'm not careful.
I figured that was tongue bite, not the quick burn from smoking too fast. Maybe both though, I have no clue.

Straight Va gives me the former bite. The carbonated beverage tingle can happen for months and months until one's mouth gets accustomed to piping in general. At least to me, whenever I laid off the pipe for a long time over the years. A little swizzle of biotene helps.

I drink an ice cold glass of water after every pipe, letting the cold water sit on my tongue.
If I took a guess, I would think bite is the overall warm/numb feeling on the tongue, not the product of an intense draw or train puffing smoking style. To me, the former is variable and bearable, the latter is uncomfortable to painful and can happen with any blend.

"Tounge Bite"?
Never heard of it. I smoke flake tobacco.

If you get tongue bite, eat some hot chile peppers...the receptors are quite comforting Mrs. Cleaver.

I usually like to drink something when I smoke. Coffee with cream in the morning. Water/Coke/Beer/Whiskey other times of the day. Anything with fat in it (cream) coats your mouth and protects you from tongue bite as does a dark stout/porter. On the other hand, water/coke/lighter beers/whiskey tend to simply identify which parts of your tongue are getting bit. Kind of like salt in a wound.
Easy test to see if I blend is biting. Every couple of minutes through your smoke, take a sip of water and hold it in your mouth. I have had a few blends bite so bad (mv-1000) it was hard to keep the water on my tongue for more than a few seconds.
Another thing to add. If you have to ask what tongue bite feels like then you haven't had tongue bite. It is pretty unpleasant and stays with you for a day or two. I clinch the pipe down the sides of my teeth focusing the smoke on the sides of my tongue. If I get bit the sides of my tongue are sore and sensitive.

It really helps to cool and coat the tongue.

I've never had anything last longer than an hour or two...never a day or two. That is unimaginable and would probably turn me off to pipe smoking. If a blend caused that, I would toss it in the bin.
By this criteria, I can safely say I've never had tongue bite.
But then again, I drink scotch, whiskey, and hot coffee every day so my tongue nerves might just be a bit burned out.

Sorry, should of said "can" stay with you a day or two. The times when it has gotten bad are when I have had another bowl of whatever I was getting bit from later in the same day compounding the effects.

I think FVF is the culprit behind many tongue bite or burn issues.....Because it can be a pain to get lit......

It makes sense, and I don’t know why I never made the connection, but while living in Texas, Northern friends would sometimes get “bit” by salsa. We would give them milk.

Lot of different ways to go here but there's no substitute for proper pipe cadence - Sloooooooow. Boitene mouthwash before bed is your friend.
