So when I chopped down the branch from my neighbour's back yard, I had another idea for an easy-to-make pipe... a poker. If you remember from my first pipe, this was my inspiration... So I took these as my starting point (the branch itself along with a side branch that came off the larger branch... I then chopped a bit off the branch and drilled a tobacco chamber and a hole in the side big enough to fit the smaller branch... After that I cut the smaller branch to size and drilled a hole in it... I put some PVA glue (elmers eqiv.) on the smaller branch, cut a slight angle at one end and shoved it in the hole drilled in the larger branch. I then found a stem that was a bit loose, so I heated it up a bit and stuck a pencil through the tenon to widen it slightly. It fits snug now... I then took the dremel to it to cut lines in the bark (inspired by the first image)... I kinda liked the green look, but thought that some dye would help cover the imperfections better, so I dyed it and glazed it to form the finished product.... The shank is not as angled as I would have liked, but I'm happy with it. The draw is wide open (I made sure of that). I haven't tested it yet because it might be toxic, but it's good practice. In this last picture you can see the angled smaller branch (inspired by the great Missouri Meerschaum)... You can also see that, while 3/4 of the circumference is roughly equidistant to the tobacco chamber, there is a quarter that is thicker due to the fact that the branch wasn't truly cylindrical. I'm ok with that. The point of this post is to show that having no talent whatsoever (artistically speaking, and pretty much in every other way) it is possible to cobble up something that should work. There's no way I could carve any other 'traditional' pipe shape, like a billiard (as you could see from the first pipe I tried). However, a functional pipe IS possible with minimal tools and less-than-minimal woodworking skill or talent.I have no specialist tools. I had a hand-saw, a £9 drill, a table-top vice and a Dremel (slightly specialised, but wasn't necessary - those lines could have been carved using a knife, a chisel, the hand-saw itself). The whole thing took just over 30 minutes to complete from start to dye. After that there were a few minutes to glaze and that was it finished.

Paddy, that pipe looks real good👍👍. I’d call that a Poker with a Military mount style stem. I hope it’s a great smoker for you.
PS That pipe would look great with a Danish style stem as well.
PSS What kind of tree did you cut the branch from? Easy to look up if the wood is toxic or not.

If only I could add a wee metal ring around the shank it might work better... that's beyond my skillset, unfortunately. I could try the Danish bit, but the drill hole isn't big enough to fit it without me needing to drill it some more. As for the tree; I'm pretty sure it's sycamore which is supposed to be toxic.

You need to get a branch of cherry and repeat the process, LL. 👍

I'm not convinced smoking tobacco from it will cause me that much damage, but at the same time, I'm not brave enough to risk it. You're right, Ted. It wasn't diseased (get it?) but it was freshly cut off a healthy tree a few weeks ago. I don't even know HOW to cure wood. I must look it up.

Very cool pipe, captures a very primitive look. I can visualize our forefathers sitting around a fire with it.

That's pretty nice. You need to get a couple briar blocks and give it a try, you're making some interesting pipes.

That is very cool Paddy. Your right about it showing what can be done with some basic tools and motivation.

I made my first one (pics to come) and was surprised how easy briar is to work with. You can drill holes and have a dremel,Go for it.

And I thought the first one would be easier to make too. Turns out this was so straightforward and much easier than the previous attempt. If I had a block of wood I would try a straight pipe next. I suppose that would be easier with respect to the drilling.

We've moved from a baked potato to an actual pipe. Quite the progress between project 1 and 2.
Well done sir.

Legend Lover " I don't even know HOW to cure wood. I must look it up." Paddy, there are simple methods to cure wood. The easiest one is to place the cut wood in a location that is dry. To prevent or minimize cracking paint the end of the wood. Be aware that some sap/pitch may come out of the green wood. This process will take several months for the wood to dry. There are methods that uses heat to reduce moisture. You have a start on a hobby to keep the hands busy. Good looking pipe.

That would help a little.

You made a functional smoking tool and didn't lop off any fingers. I'd say that's a real accomplishment. Time to move on to real briar.
