I'm looking for some help.
I've read somewhere about a tape used on stems instead of softy bits or electrical shrink wrap. Can one of you point me in the right direction?

Word of caution: if you decide to use it use caution when heating the tube to shrink. It can be found at Lowes, Home Depot, Auto Zone, Nappa Auto, Ace, True Value and harbor freight. It is inexpensive.

I purchased 10’ of clear rubber tubing, using for over two weeks. Very happy with the results. Shrink wrap will definitely not work well on vulcanite/ebonite stems. With the clear tubing clench as hard as you like, make it even more comfortable. The tubing cost under $5.00, cut to size desired after fitting the stem. Use a utility knife Or a strong pair of Scissors👍👍

Looks like from the picture is 1/2 outer diameter and 3/8 inner diameter.
I go through some softy bits too. I'm in the clenching group. I think a friend of mine said a 50 piece bag of them is around 20-25 bucks. Using this tubing will be a whole lot cheaper!

Martin, here’s a close up picture I just took with my iPad camera. Take a screen shot so you keep track. This size even fits most of those “ cheap plastic “ Cob stems and stretches onto most stems. Larger diameter tubing is also available, so far this tubing fits ALL of my stems.👍👍

Once you get use to this slightly thicker tubing you’ll find it extremely comfortable for long term clenching. Bite down as tight as you like, no damage that’s possible with soft bits, which one of my lower teeth eventually puts a hole thru.

I think I'll go with the clear plastic tubing. I wear dentures and use softy bits on most of the pipes in my regular rotation. I was thinking about a tape or the tubing to prevent the stem from oxidizing as fast.

I was thinking about a tape or the tubing to prevent the stem from oxidizing as fast. After a few smokes remove the clear tubing bit from the stem and clean. I use a combo of bee’s wax and mineral oils....no more oxidation issues. Once your stem is clean and dry you can slip on the clear tubing bit. They last a long time....good luck 👍👍

I read in another place that some use an adult "Bondage" tape, sold on Amazon. I like my softy bits. Take them off to clean when you need to. Been using them for years. Just my personal preference. ( And the wife won't wonder what the...?) On cobs I used to use surgical tubing. Not anymore.

I must be lucky that my tooth "configuration" gives me no problem with my only Lucite stems on all pipes. Course most straights, short clench, more hold. Long as the bent not too heavy, can clench entire bowl (unless of course...re-light). 7-tooth upper partial no inconvenience. Can't be bothered with time spent on de-oxidation removal. No vulcanite stems for at least 15yrs now, more time enjoying smoking, no time spent on above cleanups
