A cure for the cold that was given to me by a good friend from Ireland ( he was a pipe smoker by the way) was this: find a comfortable propped up position in bed across from a solid wall. Paint a 1" dia. circle on the wall, get a bottle of Bushmills (remember he was Irish but I'm sure any good whiskey or scotch will do also) , drink it till you see 2 dots and continue for a whole day this way and you will be able to not feel so bad! The only problem I've ever had with this was the next day !

Ok, so while the 1Q on the way in to work was still good, the Davidoff Flake Medallions on the way home were not. Couldn't get any of the flavors and irritated my sinuses. So for me it is blend dependent and I will just stick to 1Q when the cold has my sinuses all pissed off.

Pretty rare for me to get a cold, when I do though there is no pleasure in smoking the pipe.

I've got one now, and I don't smoke until it's gone. I can’t smoke when I’m sick either, it takes too much enjoyment out of the experience to make it worth it.

Man, I hate to sound like a wimp. When I have a cold, I just don't enjoy smoking pipes at all. Colds seem to start off with a sore throat. And that's what kills the enjoyment.
After that, nothing smells good, nothing tastes good, and if the cold is very bad, the smoke from my pipe will irritate my nose, and then I start sneezing violently...the kind of sneezes that hurt. So I just quit cold turkey for a week or ten days, until the cold has run its course.

If you must smoke then smoke a blend you don't like or were going to thru out....since it can't be tasted anyhow.......

Ryan: at the rate I am going , I will not likely be at JR's this Sunday.. I got up this morning to a swollen left eye just like the one that my wife has had the past week and the chest congestion is worse. Can you stop by and pick up Jim and Basil's tobacco on your way up there?

I have a bad cold right now. I've still been working and riding, but I discovered something this week. I sat down under a tree about halfway through the day earlier this week, and fired up a pipe. I don't know why I did it. My head is congested, my chest is congested and my throat is sore. But I still did it. I had packed a smooth, bent meerschaum with my own blend of Lane BCA/ODF Kentucky, and as I very slowly, very leisurely, very gently puffed at it, my sinus began to clear a bit. I couldn't really taste much, of course, but my head actually cleared a little and it was a positive experience. So I tried it again the next day, and the same thing happened.
I know I read something years ago that tobacco was somehow used as a cold remedy in the old days. It seems so counter-intuitive.

For one who is intent on smoking despite a cold or flu, I cannot recommend highly enough three ice cold showers each followed by a body blow dry right in front of an icy cold AC vent at full blast followed once more with a hefty pipeful of Five Brothers, inhaled deeply... that'll cure ya if not send you to the funeral pyre... and if living life on the edge don't appeal, take a pipe break until the cold passes.

I have had a mild cold for a week, but am enjoying quite a few bowls a day. YMMV.

Maybe twice in my life that I can remember I had a serious cold and upper respiratory issue. There was no way I was able to smoke for about ten days. I think I would have chocked to death!!! Well,I know a few that didn’t get their wish........lol

My liver is fatty and my kidneys are nephrotic... what is the best tasting hard liquor for daily consumption? I'd go with a good Bourbon, Scotch or Whiskey.

My liver is fatty and my kidneys are nephrotic... what is the best tasting hard liquor for daily consumption? If you have kidney disease drink more lemonade, you’ll see a big change in your GFR after a few weeks. I listened to my doctor friend back on Long Island and he was absolutely correct. Okay, every once in a while I do partake in a wee dram of Southern Comfort 👍👍

I chug leftover Everclear that I have flushed estate pipes with... straight Everclear with shank juice, and the leftovers from the salt alcohol treatment.
That concoction will exorcise any demons from your body, and earns an extra stamp on your man-card.

Last month I had an upper respiratory infection that knocked me out. I had a racking cough that would not go away. I could barely look at my pipes, forget smoking them. Eventually, it cleared up. I lost 10 lbs, but got it back afterwards.
To answer your question. Don't smoke while sick.
