True detective had a stirring opening with first series, second series failed miserably, now the third series has much promise, main actor is the lead in Greeen Book which is highly touted. I watched 2 episodes last night and IMHO it will be a class series.

I loved season 1, it was great. I think season 2 had such high expectations after 1, it would be impossible for it not to be panned. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it.
I haven’t started season 3 yet, but am looking forward to it.

I loved season 1 and never caught any of season 2. I guess I have some catching up to do.

I am a big fan of season 1, also thought season 2 wasn't bad, just not of the season 1 calibre. Season 3 began beautifully. Looking forward to this.

Was no one else a little put off by the end of season 1? It seemed like a bit of a letdown to me. I honestly can't even remember why now.

The end of Season 1 was a great finale to probably the best show of the entire year. Aside from 1 episode of season 2 it was a complete flop. Looking forward to season 2. Anyone know that the subtheme to season 1 was from the Cthulhu mythos about the Yellow king (referencing the post about Cthulhu Mythos here).

Season one was a classic for me. I'm one of the few that thoroughly enjoyed season two. Especially the second time around watching. The first couple episodes I wondered if there was anybody to like. By the end I found myself caring for all of them. Rachel MacAdams and Vince Vaughn were both in roles pretty far away from their regular thing. Vince was especially trashed in reviews but I thought he did great. Really looking forward to season three!

The Yellow King was actually from an earlier book by Robert Chambers. It was aptly titled *The King in Yellow.* Just finished reading it. I think a lot of that stuff later worked its way into Lovecraft, though. I had no idea that stuff featured in True Detective. I'll have to rewatch it.

They continually refer to Carcosa and the Yellow King from Ambrose Bierce and Robert W. Chambers works who are all part of the genre of the Cthulhu mythos. Basically the sign of Hastur.Dunno if this is continued in season 3(yet).

I had to sift through countless pages of threads to find this post...
This season has really got ahold of me. I've watched all of the episodes 2-3 times each now, except for tonight's. I'll catch it again in another hour.
It's a strange series. At times I find myself bored while watching it, but I dont want to stop watching. If that makes any sense...

Just watched Episode 7. I have no idea how they can wrap the story in just one more episode.

It was drawn wayyyyyyy out, could of had just 4 episodes, never heard about the Chicken man as a suspect till almost the end. Good material, Dorf really shined but left you unsatisfied.

Ya, don't know exactly what happened. Last episode seemed artificial in order to close off the season. Did read on the internet they are contemplating a season 4 to pick up on the child predator theme. I think the writers got half way through the season, didn't want to do a rewrite and so came up with this ending.

The only theory I found interesting was that the whole thing was in Purple Hazes dementia laden mind and that he was still in the vietnamese jungle (last scene). Otherwise it's just a domestic drama. I thought it was going to get interesting when they referenced season 1 with the sign of Hastur all over the place.

I liked Season 1 the most, S-2 next, and this last one third. Still all worth watching.

They started something in Season 3 with the lady interviewing Purple and never finished it. I'm hoping it rolls into Season 4. Did like Season 3 despite the weird ending.

I liked the ending... instead of the sinister forgone conclusion we thought all along would be resolved darkly, a bittersweet unexpected fork in the road gave way to a glimps of sunshine. One moral of the saga illuminates the fact that belief in the worst can be the most blinding and slippery of slopes.

I mentioned how I tied that book into a D&D game. I even painted a portrait of The King In Yellow back when I was reading it. SOmething about it all really creeped me out and left an impression. I had planned on doing a concept metal album for fun based on Carcosa. You can imagine how mad I was when I watched season 1 and realized it was too late because every toolbag in the world would probably be doing the same thing. hahahaha

It's not your standard gloom and doom ending.

Did you paint that portrait on your bedroom wall? Something pleasant to go to sleep by.

It was actually a digital painting I made over a few boring lectures in networking class in college. haha

I finally caught the last 2 episodes today and I liked the way it ended. Sometimes the series seemed drawn out, but looking back, I enjoyed it.

I would not say season 3 was bad but I also would not recommend it to anyone. It is more of a comparison between season 1 which is one of the best shows of the past 10 years so it might be a bit unfair to compare the 2.
