In another thread concerning how well Latakia aged, a person mentioned in passing that they may have some good stuff in the trading folder soon since the question was never resolved.
That got me thinking about whether or not I had any good trading currency. I have a tendency to acquire things and then forget about them. I have only been smoking a pipe for about two years so I really didn't expect to find anything. After going through my tobacco cupboard I was surprised to find that I did have a few things. That got me to wondering what cool stuff other people might have stuck away.
So before asking what kind of cool stuff you have tucked away for future trades, I'll tell mine. It is not a treasure trove by any means but it is as follows:
2.5 oz of 15 year old Edgeworth Sliced 2 1.5 oz tins of 10 year old Frog Morton on the Town 4 tins of C&D's Small Batch The Beast and an unsmoked MM Corn Dog pipe dating from about 1950 (according to the nice people at MM)

Some choice things there, Sam. I think a lot of people would be interested in the Edgeworth Slices and that MM Corn Dog is very collectible. I may have some things that folks would be interested in but I don't buy to cash in later. My cellar is modest compared to many. I just buy what I like or think I'll like. Same with pipes. I'll never sell any of them. I just enjoy what I have.

I have an 8oz bag of Penzance that I can't bring myself to open. May have to just trade it away one of these days.

My cellar is fairly substantial. I suppose there are quite a few with which I could part company in future years, others not so much. I could probably get by just fine until I move on to the next phase with the amount of bulk McClelland #5100, #2015 in the cellar and a few cobs.
I have some Frogs, Cellar and On the Town from 2012. I also have one tin of Germain's Special Latakia Flake I'd put in the kitty. I'm fairly well endowed with Smoker's Haven's Best Blend by Germain which sells out fairly quickly when available. McClelland Blue Mountain is already history due to trademark issues. It's now sold under the name Blue Mountain, 4 tins of 2012 and one 2013 of that one back. I have multiple tins of Germain King Charles and a few less of 1820; however, they are among my favorites and I'd be hard pressed to shed them.
My inventory of back years of Christmas Cheer includes two tins of 03 and 05 respectively which were well received. Some I believe which will be more valuable in future years include all years between 2010-2017. Similarly, when the 2008 cut of McCranie's Red Ribbon is no longer available I suspect it will demand a premium, one of the best Red Virginias out there IMHO. Mac Baren Va #1 appears to be a love/hate tobacco but I also suspect twenty year old tins will sell quite well in the future. I've jarred a lot of bulk of this one with an eye towards selling my eight tins in the future.
Escudo? Who knows but I have 18 tins in the cellar with varying years of age. This one is a classic but I have so many other VaPers on hand I like equally well I could probably be convinced to move them in future years.
Most of my Esoterica blends were purchased in mylar bags and jarred for smoking, not trading; nevertheless, given its limited availability, there may be a market. I do have some tins of Margate, And So to Bed and Tilbury which I might put on the table in the future.
Variety is the spice of life. I've been fortunate, worked hard and am glad to have all these on hand. It's brought me great pleasure whether I smoke them, trade them or they turn to dust after I'm no longer able to enjoy them.
As far as pipes, I like my collection and will stand pat. I am, however, currently refinishing a vintage pipe rack specifically purchased to house my collection of pre-merger GBDs. It's difficult to find any of these particular pipes individually anymore, much less the collection. I'll see how I feel about it when I get finished with the rack and may put them up for sale as I probably have too many briars than required.
It's all good.

I noticed a couple of people mentioned they would never part with their pipes. I am usually the same way and bought the Corndog because it looked interesting and it only cost $25. When I found out more about it and that many people wanted one I could never bring myself to smoke it. I would trade it for something I really wanted that I couldn't get any other way but knowing myself, there is a very good chance I may just give it away. As some people here know, I have a tendency to give things away just because I think people might get some joy from it.

The painted Peterson era Escudo is in demand and can bring up to $60+ especially to the Chinese. If you opened the Esoterica bags you killed a lot of the interest and value. It ages just fine in the bag but if you really need to, over wrap the bag with a food saver bag or stuff them into a half gal size mason jar. I've found guys don't pay for age on currently available tins but they will dig deep for stuff that is unavailable. I find well aged Frog Morton and Abingdon at shows and on boards for retail or even sale prices all the time.

I also find it weird that virginas don't go for nearly as much as aged english blends in least from what I can see on ebay and pipestud. As well as from buying and selling a bit on ebay. ie my 1999 mcclelland 22 i paid 20 dollars for.

For me, bartering / trading is done with my own pipe and snuff blends made from whole-leaf tobacco.
In the future, knowing how to cultivate, process and blend tobacco will be priceless as the regulations keep coming.

Thought I would toss one in as food for thought - Syrian Latakia. Given current circumstances in Syria, it's unlikely this one will be seen for a while if ever again from that region once it's gone. Toss in the fact C&D and G.L. Pease reportedly lost their stock in a fire and this leaf could become rare in coming years. McClelland is still selling it, perhaps others as well.

Mac Baren's HH Vintage Syrian has been a favorite of mine for awhile so I stocked several pounds over the last two years.
People say that Latakia "fades" over time with aging but, since it's almost 50% Latakia, I don't think this will matter.

Don, aging Latakia blends can be a risky thing. After about 5 years they tend to fall off in spiciness at that age.
