A recent discussion here brought into my memory some things that happened to me during my high school years.First let me say that I went to the highest rated trade school in Detroit at that time,I wanted to be a draftsman.I started studying for that in grade 8 When I graduated high school I had studied 5 years for that. When I started looking for a job everyone told me that what I had learned in those years was obsolete. This was 1960.They said computers do that now.I didn't know what a computer was.I wasn't even allowed to use a calculator in school. When I started high school they said I had to take Gym.I said I don't want to take Gym.I want to take typing. NO You have to take Gym only girls take typing..If you get the feeling that those running this most highly rated trade school had no concept of the future you might not be wrong. So here I am all these later typing with one finger so I can post here.. What say you? Can you really type or do you do it as I do?

My former administrative assistants told me to get out off their way and stay in my lane. I'm functional on my own - barely. 60 WPM on a good day?

I took typing in HS. Probably 20% boys in the class. One girl could type 210 WPM on the manual typewriter. I was OK, but I got a lot better when my job got changed and I had to type several daily reports on WordPerfect. I never got up to speed on Word. Everything Microsoft makes is counter productive. I start slow now, but I get up to 60-70 WPM in 30 minutes or so.

Yep, know what you’re saying, went to school at 5 instead of 6, with a forged birth certificate made out by a priest who my father blackmailed into issuing or he would pass out the word his taxi cab business was bringing him to see his girl friend once a month in Lafayette. Had all my electives by 11th grade, took typing, only boy in class, was the fastest typer, could not go to rally to compete as teacher hated that I was a boy who was the fastest typer and had to eat crow when school board made her admit me to her class. I don’t give up when I know I’m right. Halfway in the year they offered Auto Mechanics at trade school, went 1.5 yes to trade school. Our school was geared to the affluent students, poor people got the short shift. My school years showed me if you want it, you got to get it yourself. Did 3 yrs off campus at William &Mary college on East Coast, passed the test for Mensa even though this Cajun had no idea what that was. When I finally hired on Exxon I did a 5 yr off campus Engineering course at LSU. At 75, I know education is the key and their is more equality in the world than when I went to school.

Typing class in grade school stood me in good stead... when I moved to NYC in the early '80s, I had all the work I could handle as a temp typist... paid the rent and kept me in Sabrett's hot dogs...

I had a friend who worked at Ford and they were still using paper and pencil back in '72. I was a draftsmen in architecture and started back in '73 and worked pencil on paper till around '80 when Auto-Cad began to be the drafting method. I used a 'puter from '83 till I retired last year. And I'm still a two fingered typist ! Works for me !

A little computer game helped me out somewhat, not much but as good as it's ever going to get.

We had a big closet full of electric Royals, but the school was built before electricity and although we had lights and power for the most part, the classroom wasn't wired for the typewriters. This was way before personal computers.

I knew some girls in Lafayette and I can't blame the priest. I always thought I wanted a girlfriend from Lafayette, but I fell in love with a Baton Rouge girl instead.

My Mom could type extremely fast on those old manual typewriters. After High School and a couple years of college she was one of three secretaries to Norman Rockwell in NYC. She shared many stories with me. I can hold my own on a keyboard still, on a good day.

I took typing I highschool, my fastest was 126 wpm, numbers, symbols and letters.
I also took 4 years of drafting in highschool. When I graduated I went to the technical college here for a few days, drawing boxes and circles wasn't working for me. Either was basic mathematics considering I graduated with algebra 1, 2, 3, geometry, trigonometry and pre-calculus/advanced college algebra.

I am a one fingered typing wizard. People often comment on how quickly my one finger moves across my laptop keyboard.

I use the index and middle fingers on each hand. Someone tried to force Mavis Beacon on me, and that was the end of my "typing" journey.

I'm up to 2 fingers. I was too busy in shop classes and my senior year I got into a work release program and only had to take 2 classes and was done for the day. My wife and kids blow through typing like it's second nature but not me, Ole Two Fingers.

I'm pretty much a two finger typist. I'd never typed before my student days when I had to type up big reports. I could probably have used two fingers per hand then. Never used a typewriter in my life,it was all on PC
With tablet touchscreens I can only use one finger safely. I need the bigger size and tactile response to use both hands

I took typing my freshman year in high school, but didn't have to type papers until my senior year, so got out of practice. Bottom line is that I can type correctly if I force myself, but am much faster and make less mistakes if I type "freestyle".

Never took typing in high school. Wish I had. I used the two finger method and got by pretty good. Now I use my iPad for everything and I’m down to using one finger. It sucks! I may be typing 60-70 words per hour. Not sure it’s worth the effort...

I type at ~100wpm. Not great, but not terrible, either. A lot of folks younger than me can type way faster than that.

I learned to type in a summer class after 8th grade. We learned on worn out manuals. When I first typed on an electric, I had to nearly start over; the sensitivity got me. Now I type proficiently, I'm not sure how fast, but I eat up laptop keyboards with my "heavy hand". I think this laptop is on its third. My previous laptop went through four. Luckily they aren't hard to change out!

When I was in high school all I wanted to do was fish. I thought I would be the next Bill Dance and invent some super duper top water lure full of skirts and spinners and noise-making gadgets that bass could not resist and become a millionaire and fish every day of my life. But I took typing anyway and it was a good decision. I never got very good at it in high school, but the more time I spent at a keyboard in later years, I learned to appreciates the basics that I had learned, and knowing which finger hit which key--and speed eventually followed. Now I type considerably faster than I talk, but since I used to write for a living I suppose my experience doesn't really count, but only proves that "practice makes perfect." I am sorry to say I never got around to inventing that bass-killing lure.

I have said many times that the most important class I took in high school was my 10th grade typing class. I am not real fast, but I type faster than I can write and I am a pretty accurate two hand, fingers on the home keys, typist. Of course, the backspace key on the computer keyboard is a lifesaver.

I am spent many years repairing laptops and notebooks, and I have never seen a notebook keyboard that was built to be actually used seriously.

Index finger, middle fingers and thumb action on both hands with all words spelled incorrectly. I never took typing home economics had more girls and there was food. I can still sew and do most of the cooking around our home.
