So a little disclaimer on this one. I am getting over a sinus cold which kind of wrecked my taste buds. Had a good nights sleep last night and my nose is opened up today so I thought I would give a new blend a try and wanted something with some backbone. Not sure all my senses are back so take that into consideration.
If I had to pick a title for this review it would be: Plum Puddings Little Brother
I was putting together another cbid order recently and saw an 8oz tin of Potlatch come up for a good price Knowing how much I liked Plum Pudding and SPC's reputation I decided to take a gamble on it and snagged it for $23. Afterwords I read some reviews on it and was nervous with my purchase given it seems to be a polarizing blend that sometimes gets knocked for throwing too much into one blend. When it got here and I opened the tin, I was surprised at how much they actually stuffed in that can. I was fully expecting to open it and see it half full but it was packed so tight in there that there was little room even left for air. I had trouble getting it all in my larger wide mouth ball jar which I think is 12oz. I kept having to mash it down to dump more in.
The tin note is a great combination of earthy, smokey, nutty but it doesn't smack you in the face like Plum Pudding does when you open the tin. It consists of ribbons of multiple colors with some larger width ribbons here or there. Moisture was spot on to pack right away. Packing was easy with my method of gravity filling then pinching a wad that I stuff on top to the point of a little resistance when drawing.
Took several charring lights, a good tamping then a few initial lights but once it go going it burned along great throughout the bowl. Billows of smoke throughout regardless of pace which seemed to be more than most blends I have tried. The flavors start off right out of the gate, although, turned down a notch or two from plum pudding. I do get a lot of smokey goodness (latakia?), but it is more of a bbq smoke from a distance with a natural sweetness to it. Could of been that I just had smoked brisket for lunch and it was on my mind. There is a whole lot of other stuff going on in there as well but my novice senses (and maybe my muted senses from the cold) could not fully pick them all out. But they all were great and worked well together. I did get some herbal spicy notes maybe from the oriental and from time to time a nice nuttiness probably from the burley. Every now and then I got other notes creeping in but to be honest there were so many subtle changes to it throughout the bowl that it was hard to keep track, and I mean that in a very positive way. For the most part though, everything tended to work together for an overall full flavor in spectrum yet was not heavy or quite as intense as Plum Pudding. As I worked down the bowl it seemed to get sweeter and a little less latakia smoky and everything just kind of rounded out in a very nice way.
Beard not was outstanding afterword and was spot on to the beautiful aroma one gets when walking into a quality cigar humidor. Cedar, leather, nutty goodness.
My guess is that room not on this one is not as powerful as plum pudding was but still not a crowd pleaser. I would put the room note on this one as not overly offensive but won't turn heads either good or bad.
I am going to have add to this review once I have had a few more bowls of this stuff but wanted to come report back as I am thrilled I picked this up especially 8oz of it for the price I paid. I think this is an outstanding blend that brings a lot to the table to pick up as you go through the bowl. My opinion is that it is akin to plum pudding but with all the edges rounded off and toned down just a notch. That is right in my wheelhouse since I loved plum pudding but it is not one I will be smoking daily.
