Welcome to the patch, I'm in the exploratory stages of blends myself. These guys won't steer you wrong. I pay a lot of attention to the what are you smoking thread. Get the wish lists going! Lol.

Said it before, and I'll say it again...welcome from central north Florida. Howdy from a fellow Florida Boy, sorry I missed the first salutation.
North Florida is God's Country. I've got people all over up there. I am down near the Cape.

Let me help you avoid a common mistake. Never buy a pipe rack or tobacco storage container/cabinet thinking it will be enough for you. If you find one you think will work for even your wildest dreams/fears, buy three...or five.

Welcome from NC Ohio. I like the latika blends myself, but HH Old Dark Fired is great (kinda strong), and Scotty’s Butternut Burley (very mild) is awesome. I’ve been here about five months and I’m just getting it narrowed down to what I like, tobacco wise. Next, finding what pipes I like best! Anywho, welcome to the “Patch”, and I hope you enjoy your journey as much as I have mine.

longtom, Well, first, welcome to the Patch from Northern California. I think if you give flakes a try you'll love them. My favorites include MacBaron's HH Old Dark Fired. A dark fired Kentucky. Not sure if that means Burley, Virginia, or both. I really enjoy Dunhill Flake, but alas it is no longer available as Dunhill has stopped the production of their tobaccos. But you can try MacBarons, GL Pease and Cornell and Diehl for other flakes. If you're not a fan of Latakia, I won't recommend any English blends, as they all have Latakia and Orientals. I've had the Jolly Old Saint Nick you show above and thoroughly enjoyed it. To one of your questions, Cavendish is sweet, but not flavored. It is used as a base for aromatics that are flavored, however. Great looking pipe and welcome again to the Patch. You'll love this community. Mac Baron's HH Old Dark Fired is great. Thanks for the tip. And fancy stuff too! I was impressed with the gold wrapper. Couple of bowls into the tin using the 'fold and stuff' method. This flake is neat stuff. I found it to smoke great and then abruptly go out. A few relights were necessary but that suits me just fine. I also circled back to Jolly Old Saint Nick and enjoyed a couple of bowls driving my Jeep around in the woods over the weekend. Temps dropped into the high 30's on Monday, by the time I got into my pipe it was in the 60's and sunny, great day to be alive.

I tend to rub it out a bit and let it sit for a few minutes before loading it. You tend to have fewer relights that way. There are so many different flakes you'll have quite a time working your way through them. I've been smoking them for some time and I am still discovering new ones I like.

Welcome to the “Patch” from the Capital City of N.C. It’s good that you’ve already begun to expand your horizons in tobacco. One of my favorite Aromatic is Trout Stream. It’s good as a stand alone blend but works very well when blended with other Va.s and Burleys when a little extra sweetness is wanted.

Welcome and it seems you are off to a great start. I think the biggest learning most have in this pasttime (me included) is that you definitely can get over critical of things, which is fine, but you can also grab a handful of baccy, stuff it in the baccy hole, light it and puff.

Great start. That is an excellent first pipe and McB ODF is a delicious smoke. I'd also recommend Burley Flake by McBarren. Smooth, bite-free, mellow, and lightly sweet! Keep at it and year from now and you'll know exactly what you like in your pipe. Have you watched any youtube vids on packing? It can be a challenge at first.
Welcome to The Patch!

I had almost forgotten about this thread... continuing good advice... some random discoveries in past month or so...
The Mac Baren ODF is definitely delicious... and doing a cube cut on it is just fantastic... but if I smoke two whole cube cut flakes down to the ashes on a long drive by the St. Johns river, I will hurl lol
Latakia is creeping up on me... enjoying Dunhill EMP with a slight latakia and eyeing a rematch with my Balkan Delight...
Got some Virginias on order from sp dot com that I am very exited to try...
