Thoroughly enjoying the hobby and this site… so about a month into pipe smoking (and Briar Patch membership) I have a few observations and questions… THIS SITE This site is awesome. I have read through selected threads on the General Pipe and Tobacco Review forums all the way from the back to the front. And I have learned, in no particular order: - There is a lot to learn on proper ways to load a pipe but in the meantime it is OK to just jam it in and smoke it. - It is OK that I sometimes leave the bottom 1/3 of the bowl unburnt. - Flake sounds very interesting and a tin will be included in my next acquisition. - I’m probably not going to hell for pulling the stem out while the pipe is still hot. - Ya’ll are some sophisticated jokers who also seem to enjoy hats so I feel like I fit right in. TOBACCO Out of my 5-6 “tasting” tins… these two represent my favorite and my least favorite.. Favorite = Peterson Connoisseur’s Choice (PCC) Really enjoying this tin. Almost out and going to buy another. It is what I would call a sweet tobacco, which is what I enjoyed with cigars and chew. Says it is a blend of Black Cavendish and Red Virginia. Here is a dumb question: is this considered an aromatic? It sure does smell good. If I like this, what other blends might I want to try? Least Favorite = Peterson Balkan Delight Did not like this one at all. There was an aroma/taste component in here that I have never come across before. Based on my Briar Patch readings and process of elimination, I think the culprit is Cyprus Latakia? Maybe the Louisiana Perique (those are the only two ingredients that aren’t in any other of my samples). Any recommendations on ‘genres’ to stay away from if I didn’t like this one? Middle of the road: All of these were OK. Fine flavor and aroma. All burnt a bit drier than the PCC, and seemed to bite my tongue more. PIPE Damn I love this Peterson System 312. I will buy another system pipe in the near future. Smoking the PCC I can “finish” the bowl with 0-1 relight. I am finding as the tin gets drier there is less and less unburnt tobacco at the bottom when I’m finished.

longtom, Well, first, welcome to the Patch from Northern California. I think if you give flakes a try you'll love them. My favorites include MacBaron's HH Old Dark Fired. A dark fired Kentucky. Not sure if that means Burley, Virginia, or both. I really enjoy Dunhill Flake, but alas it is no longer available as Dunhill has stopped the production of their tobaccos. But you can try MacBarons, GL Pease and Cornell and Diehl for other flakes. If you're not a fan of Latakia, I won't recommend any English blends, as they all have Latakia and Orientals. I've had the Jolly Old Saint Nick you show above and thoroughly enjoyed it. To one of your questions, Cavendish is sweet, but not flavored. It is used as a base for aromatics that are flavored, however. Great looking pipe and welcome again to the Patch. You'll love this community.

Great feedback! I'm looking at some MacBaron's HH Old Dark Fired on smokingpipes right now and it sounds like it right up my alley...
To all - many thanks for the kind welcomes...

longtom, Latakia has a campfire/creosote smell, and is probably the strongest smelling of the condiment tobaccos. Perique smells like stewed fruit, raisins, and prunes. orientals can be a little sour, orangey, and warm spicy smelling, depending on variety. Not sure which one turns you off, but I thought I'd offer an explanation. I found Latakia hard to acquire a taste for at first, but I love the stuff now - especially during these winter months.

Welcome from the Mile High City! Glad to have you with us. Sounds like you currently enjoy aromatic tobacco and don't care for Latakia. Our tastes tend to change over time, so you may want to give a lighter Latakia blend a try in a year or so and see what you think then. As for now, there are a multitude of tobaccos for you to enjoy. Some other aromatics you may like (that don't bite) are: Lane 1-Q (vanilla), Sutliff Barbados Plantation (rum and vanilla), and C&D Autumn Evening (maple). Grab your pipe, sit down, and stay a while.

Welcome, There are plenty of ARO's out there to try, some you'll like some you won't. I go in streaks where all I'll smoke are Lat blends and then I'll smoke nothing but ARO's. Be patient and you'll figure out what you like and narrow it down.

Creosote. Bingo. That was it. Well at least I've identified the offender correctly.
I'm no stranger to acquiring tastes, so I'll definitely hold onto this tin and give it another try in a few months.

I see we covered Cavendish does not equal aromatic, though flavored Cavendish is used in many aromatic blends. Note: Peterson Connoisseur’s Choice is an aromatic blend. There are a few decent vaults of information out there including: pipedia.org/wiki/Pipe_Tobaccospipesmagazine.comwww.tobaccoreviews.comAmongst others.... If you have any questions simply post them at the Briar Patch. Folks on the forum are helpful. PS Don't forget to bring a towel, hitchhiking here can be an adventure.😁

Another tip - keep asking questions! We can send you samples, until you find what you like. Your tastes WILL change. I was a solid aromatic guy, but now I can all about Balkan's and anything heavy with red Virginia. It was the crew here who introduced me to both.

Welcome to the site. The guys and gals here are great, extremely helpful, and are great enablers. If you like flakes, I might recommend Orlik Golden Sliced, kind of a classic, as well as Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake, Bullseye Flake, and Twist Flake. I'll also throw in Erinmore Flake, it's got a light aromatic topping, but it's a fantastic flake in my opinion. The Bullseye Flake is a VaPer with a Cavendish center, which lends a bit of extra sweetness

I'm glad you've found the pipe smoking hobby so enjoyable. It's a long journey, but it's a fun one.
Also glad you're enjoying this place too. It's a nice place to hang out.
I'd suggest trying a few samples and seeing what floats your boat.
Have fun in your discovery...

If your tin gets too dry, toss a humidifying disc in, and leave it overnight. It usually bounces back. (If it's real dry, you might have to refresh the disc a couple of times across several days )

If a large quantity of your tobacco is exceptionally dry, make a cup from foil and place a paper towel soaked in distilled water on top. Seal it up and wait.
