You did a good job on the lighting and steady hand.... excellent results! I've learned how to get the most out of that Canon over the past few years. I'd really like to upgrade to something better, but I'm so comfortable with this one that the thought of going through the learning process with something new while doing production photos scares me a little bit.

What really makes it for me is the integrated wind cap. Not enough to just be silver mounted, and silver capped. It's that wind cap. That just pushes it over the top. Back in the day, there was a lot more bling on the higher end pipes. Over the past couple of years, I've been noticing that intricate silver and gold accents are making something of a comeback on some of the artisan pipes as well. I'm happy to see that because a bit o' bling never hurts. I really can't get behind the recent gold and silver foil covered pipes though. For me, that's just garish, but to each their own. I'm a sucker for bling. I kinda like the silver foil pipes. I won't be buying one because I'm afraid of damaging the foil, not because it's not cool.

"Dogies" are some of my fave style (I've 26 of 'em!) and that ones one of the nicest I've seen. Nice piece of work !

I have a Powershot, and quite a few Canons since then (last one a full frame number about 6 years old) but nothing recently as my iPhone is always with me. As long as you get another Canon, you should quickly learn the controls, as they're basically the same, just some of the buttons are in different places, and the menus are expanded. You clearly don't need to have a better camera, but there's also CAD... But one new camera can't hurt..

The biggest issue I have with the PowerShot and the one thing that pushes me the hardest toward an upgrade is that the zoom function absolutely sucks. Everything falls apart (visually speaking) when I try to use it. I have to get the camera physically close to the pipe to shoot the details, which creates problems with shadows, glare, reflection, etc. A good example of this is in the closeup photo of the stem logo. It actually looks much better than it appears in the image, but the reflection of the camera in the stem surface and the flare from the nearby silver work made things muddy.

If I were a pipe restorer, and that pipe was left for me to clean up...when it was time to send it back to the owner, I would feel like Gollum sending the ring off to Sauron.

They're like lustful, little romances. I fall in love with each one of them a little bit while we are spending time together, but by the time that they are finished, I'm already starting to fall for the next one. I do, however, remember them all with great fondness.

Anthony-
With a bigger lens (admitting more light) and a larger sensor, you'll be able to get more clarity in zooming in after the fact as you'll have a lot more pixels to work with. So you can blow up and crop, something you're already used to and good at.
I bet you could find a good used Canon DSLR for not much.

You're tempting me to go camera shopping! I have some planned shop upgrades/replacements, but once their done a new camera is the first thing I'm going after.

Huh. Cool pipe, and history lesson! Even cooler is that my last name is Dodds as well. I always thought the name to be English or Welsh, and pluralized for no reason. Lol.
I knew I was meant to smoke a pipe!

Holy Cow that is gorgeous. 100+ years old and looks brand-new. And the history behind it. Really awesome, thanks for posting.
