In Rick Newcombe's book he talks about a well engineered pipe that he was smoking at a get together...he sets the pipe he is smoking down, goes to the restroom and several minutes later picks up the pipe and starts smoking without a relight. I did the same tonight and had the same experience...anyone else?

I never go off and leave a burning pipe. If it ever happens I will let you know. đź¤

Frequently, though I live in an area where wildfires are unlikely, in or out of the house. And when playing golf, I put it in a compartment in my pull cart, and resume after the shot, putts, whatever. Sometimes I put it in my pocket and then resume.

Remember the story, but never had it happen to me. It seems it would have a lot to do with the humidity of the tobacco, too.

It's happened to me several times. It always surprises me, because I'm the king of relights. I'm always getting sidetracked or interrupted. I never get through a pipe without having to relight it at least once and usually several times.

Here's a video I did a little over a year ago about breath smoking. I the video I take a break at 1:43 to sound like I know what I'm talking about, and begin to smoke again at 2:52. I can sit a pipe down to check the mail, go get a drink, or some other task and resume smoking my pipe like I never left it. Generally no more than five minutes I would imagine, but I smoke bone dry tobacco and pack it with little to no resistance to the draw.

I do that all the time. I'll stick the pipe in my pocket while I pick up a few items at Trader Joes, pay for them, exit, and pull the pipe from my pocket and continue smoking it with no relight. It really depends on the blend. Not all of them just keep smoldering.

It’s happened to me a few times. The drier the tobacco, the longer it will stay lit is what I’ve noticed. For some reason never stayed lit in a Cob for more then a couple of minutes.

Never had it happen...but then I am never doing anything important enough to put my pipe down.

It only happened to me once (that I even noticed), in the Randy Wiley Patina bent billiard.

Happened to me once or twice when I've gone to the toilet or someone comes to the door. Normally it's not THAT long before picking it up again. I'm always surprised when it's still 'alive' when I get back to it.

Had it happen two nights ago involving a bathroom break. Can’t remember the pipe but the tobacco was Butternut Burley, which burns well everyday.

Depends on type of blend ie. flake, ribben cut, etc. and pipe and time away from smoking. Also whether I'm outside, or inside or driving a car. To many variables to make a definative answer.

I usually pack my pipes a little on the tight side. I like a tight draw. Doing this prevents my tobacco from burning after I lay the pipe down.

I had it happen a couple of times. It was PS Luxury Twist Flake (rubbed out and quite dry).
I also think it's more dependent on the tobacco smoked than the pipe "breathing".
