So I ran across a tin of this stuff at a B&M when I was loading up on some bulk and thought the description sounded good. I am hit or miss with aromatics. 1Q is a standard for me that I like very much in that it does a nice job of accentuating the natural tobacco flavor with a light topping. I really have no desire for aromatics that add flavors that aren't naturally apparent in tobacco. Not knocking anyone that does but just setting the stage for this review with my tendencies. A lot of aromatics that I have tried are great in the tin but do not translate well to the smoke.
Upon popping the tin I was already hesitant as a billow of sweet but rustic (I mean that in a good way) maple came gushing out. The tin note is quite overwhelming almost to the point of turning me away from this one as I anticipated a harsh, bite heavy, all talk and no game experience. It is really sweet. So much so that I think I got 3 cavity's from just smelling the stuff.
As far as the consistency goes though, it is a very dark spectrum of course cut leaf. Mine came ready to pack as a pinch of it easily fell apart. Others have noted this stuff can come moist but mine was spot on and the first bowl, as well as subsequent bowls, have burned fantastic with a haphazard focus on packing. Couple charring lights was all it took to chug through a bowl with minimal if any relights.
From the get go you realize that the rumors are true. This aromatic delivers the tin note through to the smoke, albeit a much toned down version which I was glad form. Yes, if you heat this one up to much it kind of goes mute like most any tobacco, but sipped at a proper pace and this thing delivers a great engulfing maple tobacco pair that just works. The maple I get when smoking it is not like a freshly opened jar of maple syrup (the real stuff), it is more like the aroma off of the plate your about to wash from breakfast that still had some dried syrup lingering on it. It is dark and deep with just enough sweetness in my mind. Tobacco is also there with some leather, nuttyness and woody notes which to me gives this one its "autumn" label as much if not more than the maple topping.
My last bowl of this (this morning) was on my commute in a well vented car so the smoke was not lingering at all. I found myself wanting to bathe in it and fought the urge to roll the window up and fill the car with it. This is definitely one you want to sit and enjoy in a place that you can savor all the smoke from it you can get. I bet it would be a raving hit in a crowd too.
Beard not is probably one of the most consistent to the notes when smoked. Just more of that woodsy maple. Most blends you wind up getting subtler notes showing up later in the beard note. This one is not the case and I enjoy it for this.
I think this one is going to step up in my rotation of commuter blends. I like to keep it lighter and on the aromatic side or natural Virginia in the car as latakia/orientals tend to leave more of a smokey aftermath. 1Q has the throne as the one I smoke the most in the car, but this stuff might just get its own dedicated bag next to 1Q in the center console.
