When I was in elementary school my Mother would sometimes serve Thuringer that had been crisped in a frying pan and served in the place bacon with oatmeal for breakfast. She used to buy it at an A&P store. Sadly those stores are no longer in NC. I guess it has been well over 50 years since I’ve had it. Does anyone know of a good source for this apparently not so common deli meat? Has anyone ever had Thuringer?

I wasn’t sure anyone had even heard of this delectable treat. What my Mother served was sliced very thin and placed in an iron skillet for just a few minutes to crisp it up. I considered it a real treat and it was great with oatmeal. It’s one of my favorite childhood memories and I’ve searched for it over the years but never found anyone who had any knowledge of it. I guess others didn’t regard it as highly as I do. I plan to order some tomorrow. I hope it will be as good as I remember.

I have read it in print, never had it though. I did a quick search on the road, thought maybe Boar’s head had it. No dice.
If you Google Thuringer recipe, some interesting links. If you have time on your hands.

I wonder if Blue Ribbon Summer Sausage is similar. I have been eating that my whole life and never tried crisping it.

Never heard of it, but it sounds interesting. I wonder if it goes by another name over here.

I've had the Bakalar's, Wenzel's Farm and Usinger's brands but IMO it's so close to summer sausage that you probably can't taste the difference.

Goetta is a big thing around here in the Midwest. It's choice pork cuts and oats that you fry like a sausage patty. Really yummy stuff.

My mother would slice it thin and put it btwn two slices of dark rye bread with lot's a mustard! I get it from a Jewish deli here in town and I'll have to try it fried like you said your mother did ! This has made me hungry for some so I guess I'll have to go to the deli and get some !!

I don’t remember if I ever had it in a sandwich or not. Too many years have passed but I do remember my Mother eating it in a sandwich and she seemed to enjoy it with a cup of coffee. I suspect I would enjoy it in the same manner.
