So I've always heard about the salt and alcohol treatment but never had a need to try it until recently. I have an old no-name basket pipe simply stamped "Gold Fire selected briar" that has been my dedicated MacBaren "Mixture" pipe for like 20 years. I usually keep my pipes pretty clean and only smoke a few bowls a week so they don't get used hard, but this one recently "soured". That's a term I've heard applied to pipes but never experienced first hand until now. (Probably my fault; had a few smokes on a trip with the guys and didn't clean it properly). Anyway, I decided to try this treatment. I decided to go with cotton balls instead of salt for a first attempt; used Everclear for the alcohol. Let them soak 24 hours (also did my favorite Nording freehand sitter, not because it was sour but just cause I figured it could use a good cleaning.) I haven't smoked either yet so that'll be the test, but after seeing what soaked out of them I think I'm a believer.

Sure a lot easier than cleaning out salt that has set up.

I do this will all my estates, especially all the ones that "have been cleaned" or "ready to smoke." Even after all the promises, it is amazing what alcohol and cotton can still extract from these clean pipes. I'm not complaining, as I love buying estates, but even a "clean" pipe will color a cotton ball in no time.

Let us know if this procedure removed the sour taste from your pipe.

I know when a pipe is really "barely" smoked when the only color on the cotton ball is stain or bowl coating

I tried that very same process using cotton balls instead of salt (someone posted that salt and wood don't mix very well). You've got great results. I hope they smoke well for you.

Smoking a bowl of Mixture by the fire with a friend on a starry January night now. Verdict is in - this worked fantastically. Nothing but sweet, bready goodness.

Oh, and learned something I should have known - you don't wanna wipe your vulcanite stem down with alcohol. Oops. My stems needed some love anyway, guess I'll order a microfiber set.
