Any BBQ enthusiasts out there ? Looking for advice on a new smoker.. 500$ not set on vertical or horizontal so far Oklahoma Joe from Lowe's or smoke canyon from bass pro .. Let me know what you think exchef might be able to help... Among others. You rang? Quintsrevenge, It really depends on what you hope to do with it. With vertical smokers, you lose footprint for things like multiple racks of ribs but you gain the ability to "stack". With a horizontal smoker, you gain horizontal footprint which in my opinion is better for things like ribs, brisket and other large piece meats, however the trade off is that if you are looking to smoke something smaller it almost always feels like a waste. I'll check out the two smokers you mentioned and give some opinions but have to say the best smoker i ever used was a 50gal galvanized trash can with chicken wire when I was in culinary school. Cut an opening in the bottom to add charcoal/wood, and a vent in the top. Simple as could be. ExChef

Best cheap smoker I ever saw was at my Barbers shop. He had taken an old refergrator and cut a hole on the side at the btm, someone made him a metal duct affixed to btm hole, cut a hole on top and affixed a metal duct with a damper, btm duct was attached to a heavy commerical trash can with duct going to btm duct of refergerator, he would load the whole thing in the morning, if you brought him something he would smoke it for you. Never ate his product but it sure was a Rube Goldberg looking thing.

Let me know what you think The side-by-side smokers that look pretty at the hardware stores are exceptionally inefficient. This is the rig that I went with over an Egg or whatever. 27" Webber and a Large Slow and sear. With that rig you can do anything.

I have to agree with Jason cooking on a cold windy day in a thin gauge BBQ is the pits. I think you can overdo the smoke thing as well if you have ever tasted a over smoked piece of meat you will know.

I use a Weber GENESIS II E-310 Propane Gas Grill, for grilling, and a Masterbuilt MES 130|B Digital Electric Smoker for smoking.I used a horizontal with a side box for years and I loved it.That type requires more time and effort, then my Masterbuilt vertical does. Both produce excellent products but the electric one maintains correct heat and is pretty much set it and forget it as long as you add chips every so often. The chip box is separate and won't let out all the heat when its time to add more chips.I'm not feeding as many as I used to as my kids are grown so the little vertical smoker produces enough meat for a couple of days for us.I use my smoker once a week and my grill 4 to 6 times per week.

My brother bought a Traeger, but I was less than impressed with the quality of the smoked meats he put out. Not sure if he dropped the ball or the unit failed to deliver.... I am pretty traditional on bbq/smoking though.

I figured for half of what I wanted to spend it was worth a shot, as well as if I don’t like it Sams return policy is great..

Son said with this one you can control the temp very well, he’s like me works with controls for a living and knows what he’s saying, last week he cooked a huge bread pudding on it for his crew. Haven’t talked lately but he likes his pellet grill.

That looks great! I had an old oil drum smoker that someone built homemade. It had holes everywhere which made it hard to keep temperature. Yours looks 100x better than what I had. I now have a charbroil kettle that I'm learning the ins and out on. It does pretty well but I think it runs hotter than the old one I had. Someday I'd like one like yours where you can set it and forget it.
Happy smokes on the BBQ!
PS I would love to see picks of the food that comes off that thing.

Smoking a pipe while smoking meat is great. I love smoking all kinds of fish from salmon, catfish, strippers and even eel. Smoked eel is incredible. I bought some at a place in upstate NY while on the road years ago for job. And I could eat smoked salmon every day.

Hahaha Turns out the arse is 'Ham'. I imagine the word 'Ham' was invented so no one had to eat an arse sandwich for lunch.

BTW,
In pre-revolutionary New England and into the American Revolutionary War, New England butchers tended to take less prized cuts of pork like hams and shoulders and pack them into barrels for storage and transport, known as a butt, which comes from the Latin word "Buttis" meaning cask or barrel. This particular shoulder cut became known around the country as a Boston specialty, and hence it became the "Boston butt".[2] In the UK it is known as "pork hand and spring", or simply "pork hand", or, as noted above, "pork shoulder on the bone".
