I usually smoke on my commute which is around 45 minutes each way. I was noticing that by the end of each leg that I was dumping out a bit of unburnt tobacco. I found I was getting the bowl down past the halfway mark most trips. So in an effort to not waste it, i started packing the bowl with less. Once the final tamp is done it results in just under the halfway mark in my MM cobs.
One thing I have noticed is that the half bowls just never provide the flavors that the full bowls do. The main blends I have been smoking in the car are 1Q, Erin Go Bragh and Davidoff Flake Medallion. None of these are very strong in any regard but I love them for their mild natural sweetness that hits when the cadence is right. I know with cigars there is a very different flavor from the same cigar in different lengths (widths have another element in play in wrapper vs filler ratio) mainly due to cigars tend to change an inch or two in and then make another transition about 3/4 of the way through.
My thoughts here are that with a fuller bowl the tobacco underneath the cherry sits in a warm environment longer and at lower temperatures. This brings out more of the flavors vs a smaller amount sitting at a higher average temperature (ie more percenatage of the tobacco sitting close to the cherry). I kind of think of it like a crockpot or smoker (pun intended) vs straight grilling.
Anyone else notice this or have thoughts on whole bowls vs half bowls of a particular blend?

I agree. The flavors do seem muted when only packed halfway, and also hotter and harsher. I'd rather throw out a little tobacco. Some tobaccos are ok when relit later as well.

Yes slowroll I forgot to mention smoking half a bowl and relighting it later. I do that on most Fridays when I am working from home. I will light a bowl in the morning and then just go out to the garage periodically throughout the day for 10-20 minute smokes. I haven't noticed any effects on flavors doing this and sometimes get a burst of flavor on relights that is different from a typical relight that I do immediately upon the pipe going out.
Problem is that I try to keep my car as non smokey as possible and leaving a half smoked bowl in the car while at work just wouldn't work for me.
I think I am just going to work out where the limit is on my commuting blends and just fill it up to there each time and not sweat any wasted.

In my briars and Meers I smoke 3/4 bowls often. When I’m in a rush I will use a Cob to smoke a 1/2 bowl. Briars have a tendency of getting to hot with a half bowl of tobacco, they also burn much faster.

I almost always chuck a good pinch at the end of my smokes. A lot of times I'm just either done with it, or the tobacco might be too moist. I've never been one (in my short piping career) to worry about smoking to ash. If it happens (rarely), it's whatever. Wasting a little tobacco doesn't bother me. It's sacrificial.

If I don't have a lot of time to smoke an entire regular size bowl, I pick a small one or a quick burning blend. I always fill my bowl to the top, and always smoke it to the bottom. Rarely do I smoke half a bowl or 3/4 of a bowl. I only do that if I'm at the end of a tobacco I've been smoking.

That thing can go from 10 mins with a shag, to 20-30 mins with a more dense blend.

I also think the extra tobacco acts as a filter of sorts, which might also enhance the flavour.
