I believe in the early '70s, Jack Palance played a pipe smoking detective called Bronk. It was a good series.

He also smoked a pipe in a segment (one of several tales) in the movie Torture Garden. I remember it was based on a tale titled The Man Who Collected Poe which, iirc, was written by Robert Bloch, the same guy who wrote Psycho. Maybe they gave him a pipe to make Palance palatable as a geeky collector.

For some reason when I saw this I was thinking of his Dracula movie.
I also remembered the INCREDIBLY groovy Robert Quarry movie Count Yorga. I heard that was originally supposed to be a soft porn flick but the script was so good and the producers created so much atmosphere that they decided to make it a more serious film. I don't know how true any of this is. Anyway...

Favorite role was in Monte Walsh (original) with Lee Marvin.

I hate to disagree, but Wilson , Palance asks Shane what have you heard about me, Shane says That You’re a Low Down Yankee Liar, Palance, Prove It.
