Recently I'm seeing Meerschaum pipes online that look like no one could carve such detail..I'm just wondering if Meerschaum is soft enough that these pipes could be made in molds.

If it’s a resin Meer it can definitely be done in a mold, I’ve watched the process overseas. Block Meerschaum is usually hand carved, however I’ve seen some block Meer pipes done on a lathe using a computer program, similar to a CNC machine.
Resin Meers crack to easy with change of weather, if you have a tendency of smoking a hot pipe. Those are not for me!!

I think for it to work in a mold it would have to be Meerschaum powder or flake pressed into a form. Block Meerschaum can't be molded. It is carved. However, the beauty and detail of carved block Meerschaum when done by the master carvers far exceeds the quality of molds in detail and precision.
