OK, I have been here a few months, and I recognize that my post count suggests that I spend too much time online. But, as long as Jessica and Lonnie-Dog are not complaining, or at least not complaining enough that it actually bothers me, all is good. And, the giddiness that I felt opening up a box from SmokingPipes that included a pound of Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake, a pound of C&D Red Odessa and a bunch of non-aromatic Pease blends, it got me to thinking how far my tastes have changed since I joined. I have been smoking off and on for about five years, and my smoking skills would likely not have me feeling too insecure, if I ever met some of you. During that time, I have been all about aromatics. I have tried some English blends thinking that was the natural progression, but none of the ones I tried every held the appeal of my aromatics. Then, I stumbled upon the patch. Here, I slotted in as one of the patch's resident aromatic guys. My journeys to anything remotely English resided in the dustbin of the failed adventures that litter my past. Yet, I listened and researched. With the help of a select few, my next attempt at straying from my aromatic comfort zone was much, much more enjoyable. I want to specifically thank @lonecoyote for selling me on LBF, which is a regular part of my daily smoking rotation, and I have already accepted that one pound is not enough. Another thank you to roadsdiverged to introducing me to Plum Pudding, which is fighting Wilke #191 as my favorite tobacco, and the beauty of red virginias. Honestly, you could sell me a tin of sawdust cut with red virginia, and I would burn that tin out. Those two lead me to my new Balkan fascination (or addiction, if I am being truly honest). Finally, a thank you to Cramptholomew for showing me that maybe making my own pipes someday is not beyond my meager skill set, assuming the primary talent necessary for making pipes is drinking scotch and shooting 1911's. Given how much time I happily spend here, I figure that in a few months, I will revisit this post and see how much my tastes have expanded...with additional thanks to those who will get me there. So, how has the patch changed your tastes, styles, etc.?

Well, it helped me first take notice of Arango Balkan Supreme, I already loved english/balkan blends but I didn't have a go to bulk really.

Plum Pudding or Plum Pudding Special Reserve? Plum Pudding to start and Plum Pudding SE is in the weekend rotation. I tapped the end-of-the-year bonus to stock deep on both. Now, with TobaccoReviews and the patch at hand, I am like a kid in a candy store wanting to try everything!!

I am smoking some right now in a 2003 Peterson's St. Patrick's Day canadian. I also love MacBaren's Vintage Syrian. Honestly, too many to post that I love that I would never have tried but for you guys and gals.

I'll come up with something.

Haven't changed a bit...still confused as ever...smoke what ever is close by...and since it is all close by...I never run outta stuff to smoke...does that answer the question? Not sure what the question was.

Pipe forums radically opened up my eyes with respect to what was out there. Until a couple years ago all I ever smoked was Mac Baren "Dark Twist" and occasionally some "Nightcap." I had tried a couple other things and didn't like them much. I didn't know there was anything else out there, because when I started smoking a pipe in college, my local smoke shop only carried goopy aromatics, a few Mac Baren tins, and a few Dan Tobacco tins.
It had never occurred to me to buy pipe tobacco online, either. I had purchased cigars online whenever I felt like it, and it just didn't occur to me that pipe tobacco online was, well, a thing.
Now I have at least a dozen things that regularly work their way into my rotation, from a wide variety of niches.

Well in terms of tobacco, not much, except for finding replacements for long gone blends that I used to smoke. Sutliff has been great in that regard. I was never a sutliff man until I started reading this forum.
In terms of pipes though this forum really introduced me to Savinelli. I always thought Sav was just a flashy Italian pipe I didn't need.. They're the best smokers around!

not to be party pooper, but been lata-holic for long time now, old ASP, PCCA (Bob Hamlin's outfit), online buying since '01. Interesting reading what others smoke, occasionally take notes if something really looks interesting. Just a plain, old ^%&*)) mostly boring person

LSUTigersFan, if your post count indicates a problem then I need an intervention! Four years on the old PSF really opened my eyes to the world of tobacco. I don't think I have changed much here as I was already on the path.

I don’t think my taste in tobacco has changed since joining the Patch but I have met some really great guys here. Some I knew from another forum but there are a lot of really great pipers here. I especially like reading the posts from newbies and watch their journey into the pipe smoking world.

The forums have been instrumental in my expanding tobacco taste. Badger & Blade - Brown Leaf was responsible for me dragging my pipes out after a 30+ year hiatus. They introduced me to P&C and online ordering, and they tempted me into their 2018 LE Larrysson. Then I found the Patch. I’ve gone from 4 to 42 pipes and from one 8oz can of tobacco to 60 blends and 37 pounds in the cellar since July and you all have been the primary enablers. My tastes have blossomed, moving from English to Balkans to Va to Vabur and VaPers plus some light aros. Tins, bulk, it matters not. And, the desire to cellar while getting is good.
Thanks to you all!

The Patch has caused me to spend a lot of money. AND, I've tried a lot of stuff I never thought I'd be interested in - or would have even know about. Black Frigate, Arango, Natural Dutch Cavendish, 1792 Flake, and myriad other stuff. The WAYS thread is TAD enablement incarnate. I avoided Latakia for a long time, but since almost everyone smokes it, and likes it, I figured there must be something to it, and there is. It's funny, the weather started getting cold, and the heavy, dark, blends started appealing to me.
Also, the continuous photos of pipes I'd like to own pushed me to say, "geez. I can't afford that, but maybe I can MAKE it." So, I'm trying to!
Thanks, Patch. You're good stuff.

In my case, I´ve learned a lot about what´s out there and how the industry sort of works. I´ve also tried a few blends that I´d never have considered such as match blends, aromatics and flakes.

I still smoke the blends I’ve enjoyed for many years before joining the Patch, but I have picked up a few new tobacco’s that I noticed many pipe smokers of the Patch enjoy. Even though I’m enjoying pipe smoking for just over 50 years I still learn something new from time to time on here, like different techniques on breathe smoking is one example.
Many other posts/threads on the Patch that have nothing to do with smoking I find interesting and knowledgeable, I’ve learned much. More open communication on the Patch than any other forum I was a member of prior. Here we can completely go “ off track “ within a thread and members here don’t start “ bitch whining like” every other pipe forum I participated in prior, eventually we ALL get back on track. If any member of the Patch decides to comment or have a question and re-opens an “ old “ thread, members here don’t jump down your throat, like other forums have done “ often “ on other pipe forums. A perfect example, I once opened an old thread on “ another popular pipe forum “ about making pipes. It was an honest and sincere question pertaining to “ making a Reverse Calabash Pipe “, I was jumped on by three members immediately stating “ we don’t usually open old threads on here “! I actually received two nasty PM’s, which I thought were quite funny!!!
The BIG difference “ I find “ between the Patch and other “ forums “, for the “ most “ part, members within this forum must come from a different planet......lol....they are personable, caring, thoughtful of others and show “ respect “ to each other!!!
Also, so much generosity between members of the Patch, which tells me this forum is made up of many truly wonderful people, there is NO other forum on the Internet that comes close to the “ quality “ of people within the Patch. What more can I say, other than I’ve met some good friends here, whether we meet in person or communicate within this forum, I am honored to meet ALL of you👌👍👍👍

I've been on a similar journey to you, LSUTigersFan. I was all about the aromatics, but the patch has opened up my eyes to a plethora of other fine blends which I enjoy and turn to sometimes more frequently than my aromatics. That's got to be a good thing.

The thing I notice the most since joining a few months back is that the patcher's (copywrite pending) have encouraged me to smoke what I like. Even though I have branched off considerably from my first love in pipes (1Q), the culture around here of "there is no tobacco/pipe that can claim being better than any other tobacco" is warm and inviting.
I think the culture here is befitting of pipe smoking. Even though there seems to be a wide range of ages and personalities on here I always picture a group of older gentlemen from a simpler time sitting on a front porch when reading posts. It comforts me in this age of go go go and constant bombardment of stimulation.

Bought a number of blends I've heard other Patchers talk about. Probably wouldn't have tried them otherwise. Glad I did. Expanded my world. There were a couple I didn't like, of course.

Since joining the Patch, my interest in other blends has increased. I have been smoking a lot of aros and neglected my English blends. I have recently broken out some of the English blends and remembered how much I enjoyed them. Thank you all for a great place to discuss all things pipe.

When I read the title of this I thought first that someone or a few here were wearing a Nic Patch. LOL!
Now that I know it is about how the forum may have changed your tastes I have to truthfully say, Not at All! My tastes are my tastes and I like what I like because I like it (kinda like "ya don't know, what ya don't know, till ya don't know it") and very seldom go looking for anything else. Although I gotta say other forums in the earlier days had me testing out new tobaccos every month and now that I have a cellar 50% full of tobacco that I'd only smoke if I had to, gives me good reason not to look. And to be perfectly honest I could probably live the rest of my days with just two tobaccos, "Escudo" and "ODF".

I can't stand 1Q. Hate it. Didn't finish a single bowl of the sample I was once given. And there ain't nothing wrong with the 1Q. No obvious defects. Seems like it's a perfectly fine tobacco. It's all on me.
You like 1Q? You do you. I can't hardly knock it.

Suggestions of ones favorite blends have exposed me to try new Latakia tobaccos I was not aware of. Experiencing new things is the spice of life, otherwise boredom controls your life.
