LOL I'd say Briar Patch created my tastes in the first place... not only did I have nothing but aromatics, I was so noob I didn't even know that they were all aromatics... between this site and informational links on this site... now I at least know the categories and have tried some really great non-aro stuff...

The thing I notice the most since joining a few months back is that the patcher's (copywrite pending) have encouraged me to smoke what I like. Even though I have branched off considerably from my first love in pipes (1Q), the culture around here of "there is no tobacco/pipe that can claim being better than any other tobacco" is warm and inviting. I think the culture here is befitting of pipe smoking. Even though there seems to be a wide range of ages and personalities on here I always picture a group of older gentlemen from a simpler time sitting on a front porch when reading posts. It comforts me in this age of go go go and constant bombardment of stimulation. I always picture the old guys in worn tweeds sitting in a musty smoking room surrounded by old books and sipping pipes and brandy. Why is it always old guys?

I've mentioned this before, but that's what I tell my wife when she has a go at me for smoking a pipe... When you think about pipe smokers, you think of old people... Who are still alive.

Well, I must admit that after being a complete lataholic for 40 odd years, couple guys here caused me to discover HH ODF, essentially my only non lat smoke, but I smoke a lot of it now. You owe it to yourself to try Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky. It's what I always wanted HH ODF to be, and then some.
I'll try it on my next order

How has the BP changed my tastes. Well I used to spend money on wine, women and song. But now it’s on PAD and TAD. Life was so much cheaper before I found the Patch😜
If it wasn’t for all the wonderful folks here, I would still be floundering. I’ve learned so mant things, be in technique in smoking or the idiosyncrasies Of different blends/types of tobaccos. And I’ve also learned things or had things clarified here that aren’t even pipe related. My mother used to always tell me. “Keepyour mouth shut and your ears open, when around other more experienced or possibly older people. You might learn something!”

I still smoke the blends I’ve enjoyed for many years before joining the Patch, but I have picked up a few new tobacco’s that I noticed many pipe smokers of the Patch enjoy. Even though I’m enjoying pipe smoking for just over 50 years I still learn something new from time to time on here, like different techniques on breathe smoking is one example. Many other posts/threads on the Patch that have nothing to do with smoking I find interesting and knowledgeable, I’ve learned much. More open communication on the Patch than any other forum I was a member of prior. Here we can completely go “ off track “ within a thread and members here don’t start “ bitch whining like” every other pipe forum I participated in prior, eventually we ALL get back on track. If any member of the Patch decides to comment or have a question and re-opens an “ old “ thread, members here don’t jump down your throat, like other forums have done “ often “ on other pipe forums. A perfect example, I once opened an old thread on “ another popular pipe forum “ about making pipes. It was an honest and sincere question pertaining to “ making a Reverse Calabash Pipe “, I was jumped on by three members immediately stating “ we don’t usually open old threads on here “! I actually received two nasty PM’s, which I thought were quite funny!!! The BIG difference “ I find “ between the Patch and other “ forums “, for the “ most “ part, members within this forum must come from a different planet......lol....they are personable, caring, thoughtful of others and show “ respect “ to each other!!! Also, so much generosity between members of the Patch, which tells me this forum is made up of many truly wonderful people, there is NO other forum on the Internet that comes close to the “ quality “ of people within the Patch. What more can I say, other than I’ve met some good friends here, whether we meet in person or communicate within this forum, I am honored to meet ALL of you👌👍👍👍 Amen

I've taken the opposite path. I tried an aro first, hated it, tried Nightcap and fell in love. Now I hardly smoke Nightcap although I still love it. Darin sent me Dorchester and that was the beginning of my Virginia affair. For the past several months I've fell in love with Red Va's, thanks to william. But I've ran the gauntlet and now I've found aros that I actually enjoy. pepesdad1 gave me, pretty much, a little bit of everything from aged va's to Lakelands and aros. Many members here introduced me to new things. @lonecoyote introduced me to my absolute favorite, Red Odessa. It hits everything button for me. And then beardedmi with SG that is non existant... Yeh, those of us with severe TAD know that 1 blend just isnt enough though. My taste changed dramatically and now I've learned that I just love all tobaccos. To me, they all have their place.... in my cellar (which I had no clue that cellaring existed before). If it wasnt for this forum I would have put the pipe down after my first pipe that I didnt enjoy. In hindsight, if I didnt find this place I'd probably have a new truck in the driveway... but wheres the fun in that?

When I started on my pipe journey this time I had a pouch of Capt. Black original and still no idea what I was doing. I lurked here for about month and all the tobacco blends I saw tossed around really didn't know where to start. Checked out P&C and started with tin samplers and had lat blends and aro's. I started with about 11 tins and worked my though them and then joined the Patch. Now I have over 100 tins of different blends and 10lbs of different bulks. Most are lats and aro's as I enjoy both of them. I'm starting to pick up some VA's and VAPERS to celler to get age on them as at least to my taste they seem sour so I put them away and will see if my taste changes after some time. Even my taste in pipes has changed. How could the cheapest pipe made produce a good smoke? I probably would have never tried a cob until I saw how many smoked them and enjoyed them. I have around 30 of them in rotation and even stain and glaze a couple. It's been a great journey so far and will only get better.

The best tobacco I discovered in the last year is/was Macbaren Burley Flake and that was due to JimInks heads up shortly before it came to market.

Not at all. I've developed 'em over the last 50 years. Though it is interesting to read all the ideas presented here.

I have to say that it is through some of the amazing denizens of the Patch that I have been introduced to some great tobaccos.
I am still learning what I really enjoy but the reviews of members like jiminks and others have been leading me well.
