Nathan's for sure.
If you wanna go classic: sauerkraut, grilled onions, dijon mustard.
If you wanna get freaky: hot chow chow, ranch style beans, & some chili powder.
Cook those dudes in beer for bonus points.

Hot dogs just don't seem to have the popularity of a hamburger when eating out. To me hotdogs are a make at home food except for the rare occasion when I seek them out. Although our local corner store offers six kinds we have never partaken. If you ever find yourself in Oklahoma City, check out Mutt's. It's da bomb.

I like a good hot dog, problem is that I like to eat to many of them. I have tried some of the Hot dog brands that are mentioned, but my favorite is a Oscar Mayer Beef hot dog with yellow mustard, onions, and mayo with a light sprinkling of black pepper... yes I said mayo!!!

I prefer proper sausages in my hot dog rather than frankfurters.

I prefer proper sausages in my hot dog rather than frankfurters. Then it's not a hot dog, Paddy. I don't make the rules; I just enforce them.

It's Sabrett, Nathan's, or Hebrew National, depending on what's available.
Sometimes:
Toasted bun with Land O Lakes white american and chili (if available)
Gulden's or any other spicy brown mustard and kraut (especially at Gray's Papaya or Papaya King), and/or/not NYC style cooked onions
Chicago style WITH sport peppers

Either chili and onions or just Nathan's or just plain if I have neither

I don't make the rules; I just enforce them. ... hot dog noun 1. a frankfurter, especially one served hot in a long, soft roll and topped with various condiments. You are so right, jackdiamond. I never knew that. My answer is the same with respect to the condiments... But I still prefer a sausage in a roll.

For me, I like ketchup, cheese (cheddar) and chopped onions. I like jalapeños, but they don't go well with my reflux. So, sacrifices have to made to tame the reflux beast. For the hot dog itself, I prefer Nathan's and buns from a local bread company, Evangeline Maid bread. It is made to be softer (more moist), and it makes the hot dog with a ton of toppings more manageable.

I've also been known to go into a 7-11, get a 1/4lb dog, and dress it with the liquid nacho cheese, pickled jalapenos, and onions. That's some righteously awful food, right there.

The truth be, this thread was meant for Hot Dogs aka Frankfurters. Now, I prefer a real sausage like a Bratwurst, Knockwurst or Kielbasa but this thread was meant to cover that American tradition. I feel strict interpretation of original intent should be observed whether the Constitution or Hot Dogs. Note: this was meant as humor. Last summer, a neighbor's Schwaben relatives came for a visit. With them came real German Frankfurters (Würstchen) made from pork and packed in a sheep's casing. Served up with lentils. Some kind of special dish enjoyed in southern Germany. With homemade Spaetzle. Very good, too.

Vienna Beef dogs 1st, Hebrew National 2nd choice. German Brown or Horseradish Mustard and onions at home, Chicago style if available out.
To quote Clint Eastwood, “Nobody, I mean nobody, puts ketchup on a hot dog”.

At home- Boiled Oscar Myer weenies on fresh, toasted rolls. French's yellow and Heinz ketchup. Sauteed onions and a heavy dose of low-sodium celery salt. If I have it, I will use brown sauce rather than the classic duo. Preferably Daddy's.
I prefer Ball Park dogs when outdoors grilling etc.
Also, when I have it in the fridge, I love all those awesome British condiments. Piccadilly, Branston Pickle etc...
And I abhor all beef Franks. They taste like the smell of a wet dog to me.
Other good brands are Silverstar(same dogs they serve at Pirates games. And those massive 1/4 lb dogs from Schwann's or Omaha Steaks are great.
And Skyline Chilli! I could eat their sauce like a soup with onions and crackers.
