Posting this for a friend who's looking for answers I can't find. He bought a "Trombone" pipe with a silver hallmarked band. The band has EB inside a diamond above the hallmark. He was told it's a Barling but I've never come across a Barling with that type of logo on the band. Any of you recognize this one? I've looked at pipedia and Phil's but can't find anything.

Thanks. I didn't find that when I was doing research on it. It's not my pipe but someone I know who bought it on eBay and was told it was a barling.

Very Interesting. The EB clearly suggests Barling but the early stamps had WB underneath the EB. Jesse (sablebrush) could answer more definitively or you may try Ken Barnes on PM.

Looking at the Ad posted by Perry it also has a EB stamp and from the looks of the quality of pipe I'd say its safe to say its a Barling. If I'm correct Barling in the early days made pipes for other entities so the ad not stating it was made by Barling isn't surprising. But, if anyone knows I'm sure Jesse will.

I don't think it was a Barling. A friend on another forum did some research also and came up with this:
"The first mention I can find of the company is in early 1895; advertisements (like the one below) continued into 1896, but thereafter I can't find the company in London directories, newspapers, or almost anywhere else. The answer lies in a June 17, 1898 listing in the London Gazette stating that the company had been struck off the register and dissolved."
As for the EB in the diamond, it was probably the mark of the silversmith who made the bands.

I was wondering if the EB could have been the silversmith - thought it might have been a silly suggestion as I've nothing helpful to add, so I never voiced that. You're getting somewhere, at least.

That was suggested by a couple of antique dealers I talked to. I was told that sometimes the silver smith would put their mark on their work. The guy who has the pipe paid $10 for it on eBay.

Barling's EB and WB were not in a diamond that I've ever seen. Here's a Barling example: My vote is - definitely not related to Barling.

Just checked out Tom Colwell's "Who Made That Pipe." No mention of "Trombone."
