Thanks everybody. I took too much off the taper end to start with and was afraid to sand any further and mess up the fit. Probably a pretty standard rooking mistake.

The stummel turned out fantastic.
I am not as enthusiastic about the stem replacement. Your new stem is cut well, but it doesn’t have the same proportions as an original Pete army mount. It is too thick at its central point.
I would happily smoke the pipe the way it is, but the replacement is obviously a replacement. It doesn’t blend in with the original design.

I actually like the new stem better than the old one. You have a price in mind for this guy?

Nice pipe! I like the new stem. You did a great job cutting it. The thicker part actually adds some visual weight to the stem end, which evens it out, IMO.

You are correct in your points. I didn't try to copy the original, maybe I should have. I tried to do what I thought looked right. Knowing it was my first try I figured it wouldn't turn out correct anyway. Thanks again for all the comments and such. Only way to learn. I enjoy positive feedback even more. Makes it worth the time. huzzah

I got a message from a knowledgeable stem guy that I tackled a difficult stem for my first try. HAHA, just my luck.

First off, Damn stems are a pain in the arse. Hats off to those of you who do them well. You have earned my respect. It is a lot more work than it looks like and this one is barely acceptable. Anyway, I bought this Pete knowing I would be taking a crack at my first stem replacement. It also has a chip missing from the outer bowl you can see in one of the photos. Here are the results. I am probably going to sell it so don't hesitate to post a value if you have any thoughts keeping in m ind the new stem and the chip. Great first restore!!

I agree that it's obviously not a match for the original stem...but I'm another who actually likes the replacement stem configuration better. The high point adds a bit more character, and it's a plus.
Good job!!

Knocking some ideas around on giving the outer bowl a face lift. I will keep a log here if it goes any further. Thx for the comments.
