Just finished these two Grabows. The first one is a Royal Duke and the second is a Starfire.

Very nice! Great job, Ken! I find that my Grabows are great smoking pipes...the earlier the better.

Very nice! I've never seen a Starfire, really cool shape. I love Grabows. I know I say this a lot but even the old beat up ones I've picked up on Ebay have turned out to be great pipes.

Glad to see Grabow gettin' some love here on the Patch. I've been on other sites where some of the nose-in-the-air members poo-poo them...typically until someone pipes up to challenge..."have you ever tried one?" That usually evokes little response. Even though Grabow is making a much more limited number of shapes today...they still make a good quality pipe, particularly at the price point. In fairness to them...they had 400 employees in their hayday, whereas they're about 23 folks today...a real reflection on where this industry has gone. Still, a majority of the production steps are still done by hand. I've toured the Grabow factory half a dozen times...those folks work really hard, and appreciate their customers. Your Starfire is shape 20 (aka X03)...a shape I like a lot. As Dave G noted...it's from their "Continental" shapes...aka the "X Series". After a small group of pros at Grabow spent a lot of effort and time (1959/60) deciding which to go with...there were 12 shapes chosen to become Continentals. Here they are: These were made only from 1960 - '64...so that's the vintage of your Starfire. A good catch! Hope y'all don't mind me carrying on with this small un-provoked history lesson. Nice job on both, congrats.

Thanks Joe, I now the vintage of the Starfire and a Sculptura Shape 48 or X01. I love my Grabows and haven't had a bad smoke from one yet and have a few more I'm working on.
