What sort of tobacco do you prefer to smoke in big pipes - by big I mean a Refbjerg bent billiard with an inside bowl diameter of 1.0" X 2.0" deep. This pipe holds a whole lot of tobacco - so what's best? English? Balkan? Virginia, bur, per or straight? Ribbon cut, crumble cake? Flake, coin, folded and stuffed, rubbed out? cube cut? Other?
I know it is personal preference, but I also know you all have some opinions on this, and frankly, experimenting with this big boy uses up a lot of tobacco.
Can you give a guy some direction?

I have read (can't say for myself) that large bowls in big pipes should carry English. small bowls for Virginias cause of heat. Not speaking from experience as I smoke pretty anything in everything.

I prefer English and Balkans in my huge bowls.
I did make the mistake of filling one with Dark Plug... once.

I like English/Balkan blends. Tends to smoke better than others when "going the distance" but as a personal preference, just a good area of blends I enjoy the most for long contemplative smokes.

Aromatic blends do well for me in pipes with larger bowls. Over the years I have gotten away from giant pieces of briar preferring a medium sized pipe for almost all my smoking adventures.

Most of my pipes have a chamber depth of at least 1 1\2” and a chamber depth of at least 3/4 “. A good many are nearer to having a depth of 1 3/4” up to 2 1/4” with a diameter of 7/8” or more. I’ve found all blends that I smoke do just fine regardless of chamber size. YMMV!

I tend to smoke Wilke light aros in the really big pipes. Too much English overwhelms me.

For me I find that Flake tobacco’s smoke best in a pipe with a large chamber. There are those that swear that Flake tobacco’s smoke best in a narrow chamber. Every pipe smoker has their personal preference........YMMV. Balkan tobacco’s also smoke well for me in a large chamber👌👍

Orientals, Balkans and English are what I prefer in a large bowl.

Any flake or cube can be converted into a ribbon or Shaq cut ASAP with a little food processor. I used to like a small bowl when I worked; however, after I retired and thinned down the herd, the only pipes remaining were larger bowls. I like all tobacco in large bowls - Burley in cobs, Lat in meers, Va and VaPer in briar.

Quite nicely Paddy. I packed it on the light side and it was a good smoke - a long smoke, but a good smoke. The pipe handles well, and while not exactly a clincher, it is well balanced and comfortable. I need to smoke it more often! The Refbjerg next to a Peterson 312

Glad it went well for you. I'm saving my mm general for a sunny day in the summer when I've nowhere to go.

Told ya...that stuff isn't for sissies...will knock your socks off...that is why I still have the bulk of a pound left...kicks my butt every time I try to smoke a small bowl of it. Try it with 5 Brothers...make sure you call 911 first.

I put it in that huge GBD you gave me. I smoked most of the bowl in 1 sitting. I think I grew more hair on my chest and a few beard hairs turned WHITE. Good stuff, but I like it in a small to medium size pipe.

I get a better burn rate and find Sutliff Ready Rubbed less fussy in a larger pipe.

I load the big pipes with latakia, but I don't think that it makes any difference at all.

I have had the same experiences as lonecoyote. After years of insisting on tall, narrow bowls for flakes, I've learned that large bowls can work well with flakes, smoked slowly, especially with hard-pressed flakes like McClelland Dark Navy Flake and Dark Star.

I find that a larger pipe sort of coerces flavor out of less flavorful blends, emblodening whateverers there. I smoke sweeter blends thru them, usually a blend with liquor in the topping. Somthing about the nature and burn rate of a liquor topping really brings things together. Captain black white in a small bowl is fairly mute, but in a large bowl, there's a much deeper quallity to the tobacco's nuttyness and strength.

I am not sure. I just traded an enormous old Wellington for a little Mastercraft. I like to clench a pipe and it is too difficult with a giant one. I also like stronger flakes so small bowls are more suitable.
