Have noticed several members are afflicted with this. I've dealt with it for ten years. It varies in intensity. Currently going through an elevated period. It interferes with my enjoyment of music and sleep, as it is loudest when I lay down. Just a misery loves company thread, so please pipe in, if your so inclined.

I fear it's on the cards for me. I get it a few times a week for a few seconds, but I'm sure that's only the start.
I've heard it's soul-destroying.

I have it real bad. After years of stupidity not wearing hearing protection it will never go away. If I start a piece of lawn equipment up and don't have my ear muffs on it's really bad for a couple days. I had my doc check it out and was told when I don't hear it anymore I'm dead.

If you work in Industry, wear ear protection. My damage results from brick press operator, wood cutter in boat factory, playing drums and listening to Hendrix and the like on 400 watt RMS HiFi systems, in the past.

I don’t sleep well do to pain from small fiber poly-neuropathy. At times I too get the constant ringing in my ears. I find listening to white or brown noise using my Rain, Rain app on my Apple device with earbuds helps somewhat. All I can recommend is give it a try, might help you as well.
It really “ bites “ being ill and getting older!! I’m sure many of you agree.

I hear a high pitch static like noise all the time but what really bothers me is when I hear my heart beating in one or both ears. Doesn’t seem to be anything is available to stop these noises. You’re right, they can be very unsettling and ruin any chance for sleep. Wish I had some good advice for you but all I know to do is ride it out. Not much help I know.

I have it too. With me it's a constant hissing, mostly high pitched but it varies a little. What bugs me most is listening to any music, the tone shifts on longer notes. I thought there were problems with something in my stereo equipment until I heard it on the TV. I've somewhat learned to ignore it much like the floater in my right eye. Phooey!

Yes, your right, there is no cure. I once got some relief when using Mucinex for other issues, but that was only temporary.

That's how it affects me too @orley. Ignoring it is only viable for me when the loudness level backs off. Occasionally, I'll have nearly symptom free days, but that is usually a precursor to an onset of louder noises.

Mine goes away at times, but it is really bad in left ear right now. More than rarely wax buildup makes it worse, but usually nothing gets rid of it. When it does go away I often don't notice.
Monkees and Archies did me in

I havent heard the sound of silence in at least 5 years. I'm "young" but lots of guns, loud music, loud motors, being a machine operator in a factory for years, and construction work for the last 15 has taken its toll on my ears.
When I was really young I always had trouble with my ears. I finally had tubes put in them.
I have a hard time hearing people with a certain pitch to their voice too. Its quite annoying to both me and them. Doctors said I WILL eventually go completely deaf. Maybe then the constant ringing will stop. I fear it wont. But it sure will cut out a lot of the BS I deal with daily!

I suffer from this one too. I was a gunner and track commander in an armored cavalry regiment. I've noticed alcohol at night makes it worse the following day. I use electric equipment to do my lawn now and normally listen to a radio at night to help me sleep. BBC or Coast to Coast work best.

I've got it, too. Probably from playing in super-loud bands in the '60s and '70s.

I've had tinnitus for so long I don't even know it's there. Except I do know that It effects my hearing of high frequencies in the tinnitus range. Had it on and off for 50 years since my days in infantry training in the USMC. Quite a few years ago it became "on", no off. I can tell how it's progressing by what notes on my piano just sound "clunk", no note. Used to be the upper 2 keys, now it's the upper 6 notes. Oh well.

My son started working at a cheese processing plant a year ago and was complaining about having to wear ear plugs. I told him he better wear them or a good pair of muffs if he doesn't want to end up like me. He gets real irritated when he is talking to me and I'm constantly asking him to speak up. He caught on and got a pair of plugs custom fit.

CC Crane makes some great radio’s, no doubt about it. Back in the late 80’s I restored a ‘51 Zenith Transocianic radio, I can kick myself in the butt for selling that hand crafted tube radio. Back in the day the brand Zenith was top notch......” the quality goes in before the name goes on “ was their motto. The case was solid wood bound in high grade leather, American quality and ingenuity.
NOW BACK ON TRACK.............

Tf, glad to see you're back. Try this. Brown noise. I have tinnitus from my time in the service myself. This works miracles for sleep and relaxation. You may want to try listening to music that has lower tones as well. I'm thinking of anything with organs. Early grateful dead, the doors, allman, deep purple, etc.

I ran jackhammers without ear protection when younger, but most of the damage came in about 2000. At a fireworks show, someone other than the pro’s launched a rocket above the crowd came down and the explosives detonated over my shoulders... the blast drew blood on the shoulders and in the ear canals (equal to an m1000) .
I have gotten used to dealing with it... it sucks, but it is what it is... sure beats diseases that others have.
I was recently fitted with Hearing aids... they help somewhat with mitigation. Help immensely with hearing conversations in restaurants and noisy environments... the newest technology is helpful.

Me too. Guns, printing equipment, loud music. What I hear is like a million crickets. It comes and goes but it's really bad this week.

Wow! How did I sign-on to a forum with a bunch of "old farts" anyways? @truculentfrogs Good thread you started Mike... I'm 65 yrs young, and fortunately, do not suffer from a number of ailments that my fellow Briar Patch members appear to suffer from. I do send out to you all a strong prayer of recovery, sooner than later, and I truly mean that. Its a *itch to suffer. Who wants it and who needs it. And, I can't even imagine what it must be like for some of you. I had to look-up what tinnitus is, and ascertained the meaning at MAYO CLINIC TINNITUS. Under one tab is "Symptoms & Causes," and the second tab has "Diagnosis & Treatment." Apparently, the different medications can help in reducing some symptoms to help make tinnitus somewhat bearable, but these medications do not cure tinnitus. I found one of the alternative treatments, acupuncture, to be of interest, and I think this would be an avenue to pursue and gain more knowledge for some of you. I know my daughter had some decent anxiety going for her recently, and this was really bothering her at her work. She located a good acupuncturist here in Bend, OR, and a couple of sessions helped her tremendously in relieving anxiety symptoms, to where she doesn't have an issue with this any longer. Something to think about
