I'm watching a recently available blu-ray restoration of a movie that I've always loved. Not one of those highly praised artistic films but a document of both historical and entertainment value, showing a lot of pipes being smoked! The First of the Few (1943), the classic about the development of the Spitfire, starring and directed by Leslie Howard. Later in the same year in which the film was released, the commercial airplane in which Howard was traveling to Portugal was shot down by the Luftwaffe. No wreckage or remains were ever found as the aircraft went down in the patch of the Atlantic between Ireland and Portugal. goo.gl/images/B9ut7G

Never watched the movie, but that’s a great picture from an old movie where an actor is enjoying a pipe. Thanks for sharing 👍

That was a good movie about the man who developed the Spitfire, R. J. Mitchell, an avid pipe smoker. Wonder how many ashes he dropped on his blueprints?

Have watched and enjoyed that film too. Sounds dry, but it was well done and informative. It is surmised the Nazi's knew Howard was aboard.

I've never seen it either, but that's a great shot.

I've never seen it either, but that's a great shot. In some scenes you can just make out the white spot on the stem of his pipe.
