I've never had a beard, but I appreciate how a well trimmed beard looks on other fells.I was recently sitting on a bench in a store waiting for my wife to do some shopping.A fella walked by and spoke to me.I complemented him on his beard..He Said.. Well it used to be longer until a few days ago I was burning some brush, and my friend yelled..Hey Jimmy your beard in smoking..That made me wonder how many pipe smokers have ever had smoking beards.

I've smelled burning hair a few times but certainly no "brush fires"!

I have signed my mustache a few times while lighting when I just filled my zippo. One time I hit a bump while driving and embers flew out of my pipe. A few minutes later I smelled burning hair. One was in my beard but there was no catastrophic damage.

I’ve had a beard, of various lengths, for over 45 years and as far as I can remember, I’ve never singed or set fire to my beard. Clothing and other items haven’t been as fortunate. AJ

Rain jacket and a few shirts have little burn marks. Have never caught my beard on fire with a pipe. I have caught it on fire before.

Never caught my beard on fire, but...
When I was stationed in Cordova AK in the Coast Guard I had a mustache (beards weren't allowed) and I used to smoke cigars, especially when I was standing in a stream fishing for salmon to help keep the bugs away from my face. I used to by JR Cigar knock offs because I could afford them and they were actually pretty good, especially for a buck a stick. It seemed that overall they were good, but occasionally you would get one in a bundle that was just "off" maybe it didn't burn right or had a funky smell, or some other flaw. Being the cheap bastard that I am, to me, it was worth the gamble.
One day was fly fishing and smoking a cigar and had smoked it down until there wasn't much left. It went out, and I figured I could get one more light and a few puffs out of it. When I lit it, I smelled a horrible smell. I just shrugged it off as one of those flawed cigars...until I got home.
When I walk in the house my wife started laughing hysterically and said "What the hell happened to your mustache?"
I looked in the mirror and low and behold, about half of it was gone. That terrible smell was my mustache going up in smoke. I didn't even feel it.

Great story cgvt. So far I haven't had any beard ignition from a pipe. We have a thread going about beard oil... Beard oil and pipe might actually be a bad combination.

A few years back I was giving a new member the guided tour of our gun club. We stopped off to spectate on the black powder range. One bearded chap was shooting what looked like a long barrelled Tranter type revolver with a skeleton stock. The third misfire saw the precussion cap fly off its nipple, still fizzling. It landed in his beard with incenery effect...

No burning of the beard so far, but I am in the clothes burning club for sure.

My beard has been safe, during my pipesmoking years.
But, when I was a teen, I made a mistake during a candlelight service a church. I had to scratch my nose, after my candle was lit. I believe that I had to get a short haircut later that day.

My wife just reminded me that her brother accidentally set his alter boy outfit on fire. A man on the front row jumped out of his seat to start slapping out the flames. The whole church was confused by this performance.
I think the AC came on and the gust of air pushed the flame onto the outfit.

Hasn't happened yet. Been smoking a pipe for 20 years. Cigars even longer than that. My beard is always at least a few inches long. Usually longer.
Maybe I've just been lucky. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

A couple years back,my wife went on a cruise with her Mother and sisters. On the boat there were these two gentlemen that were quite stylish and just a bit effeminate. She had seen them around the boat several times, and a few times in the cigar lounge. At one of the dinners she spotted them in the company of,her words so forgive us dumb rednecks,a couple of "Smoking Beards".
