This new development is in a community not too far from me. The trend continues. It's all about the children, after all.
SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - Using tobacco products on South Whitehall Township playgrounds will now be prohibited after township commissioners voted Wednesday night to ban the use of tobacco products on all township playgrounds.
The resolution bans the use of tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco and more in an effort to create a healthier atmosphere for township children. The resolution was inspired by Young Lungs At Play, a program under the Pennsylvania Department of Health that aims to create tobacco-free parks in Pennsylvania.
Page Durflinger, the township’s recreation program manager, said the ban of tobacco products aligns with the mission statement of the township recreation department, which strives to "educate and assist in the growth of the community through our open spaces, parks and recreational facilities while contributing to their physical, social and emotional well-being."
The resolution, which Durflinger introduced to the commissioners, designates all township-owned playgrounds as tobacco-free zones. The resolution bans “any product containing, made or derived from tobacco or nicotine that is intended for human consumption, whether smoked, heated, chewed, absorbed, dissolved, cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco and snuff.” Also included in the ban are electronic cigarettes and hookah pipes.
Durflinger said tobacco use near children and others engaging in recreational activities was "detrimental to the health of others.”
“Parks are about clean air, natural air, and engaging in healthy activities," Durflinger said. "Smoking just doesn’t fit in with that.”

That’s unbelievable, the same was done a few years ago in all NYC parks. There is a town in Colorado where no smoking is permitted outdoors, it’s now a big court battle. Can you imagine nit being able to smoke in your own backyard!!!

Can''t say I get too upset about smoking bans on children's playgrounds. I can understand that. But to extend to all parks, open areas and even your backyard is so extreme. The bit drives me nuts. Particularly when in Colorado in those same areas where tobacco smoking is banned, Marijuana smoking is not.

To bad the people in South Whitehall Township are not smart enough to move away from smoke, if there is a person blowing smoke on them. Instead of moving away (which would be exercise and healthy) they have to just remove the possibility that they would have to make the decision to move. Also why is chewing tobacco on the list? They cant even make sense in their own stupid laws.
“Parks are about clean air, natural air, and engaging in healthy activities," Durflinger said. "Smoking just doesn’t fit in with that.”
What about chewing tobacco? Morons. Outlawing chewing tobacco because you want clean air should be enough to fire all of them.

Morons is the correct term to be used...start worrying about over eating and industry pumping out pollution, lead in their water supply and on and on it goes.

Can''t say I get too upset about smoking bans on children's playgrounds. I don’t know, it sounds pretty idiotic to me. Secondhand smoke dangers are not based in fact... snuff and chew... are they going to inspect gums and nasal cavities to enforce the law? I am currently sitting on a park bench in Apache Junction, kids walking by look at me strangely, obviously not ever having seen anyone smoke a pipe. And the proponents of these actions would like to enforce the mindset that we pose a risk, and that we should looked upon as societal outcasts.

I was thinking the same about the vaping... If you're vaping 0mg nicotine then it's not a tobacco product at all. Is that then allowed? Are they going to stop cars driving in the streets beside the park because of the emissions? Where does it end?

It never ends.
The playground I understand.
Please raise hell about my smoke that is 100 feet away from you, but I truly hope you enjoy you're triple cheese burger, large fries and large coke while you're just sitting in your car hoping someone else is watching your kids.
"Clean air" is a joke in itself.

What happened to, " excuse me, would you mind moving down wind, that smoke is bothersome?"
Do we always have to make it a legal issue? The snuff and chew are funny! Just say it's because you think you are keeping your children safe from evil. PC should mean politically coddled, not politically correct.
🙄 I'm going to have a pipe load...

Well at least you can still smoke a joint in the park. Put down the candy and step away from the swing set.

One way to deal with all this stupidity is to raise taxes both Federally, State and Local to get back all the $$s lost when they reduce the amount of tobacco products and need to makeup what is lost to maintain public services. When you hit the pocket books of those who don't smoke things will chabge. "Money talks, the rest walk"

Smoking is not popular and never will be again. Look at the butt piles near any place where smokers hang out. I imagine a smoker is as welcome on a playground as a guy nipping from bottle in a brown paper bag. I've considered the outside world smoke free for years.

I live in a pretty heavily LDS (Mormon) area of the country....they are pretty culturally/ religiously adamant about no smoking no drinking. Here in Gilbert, every September we have constitution week where the constitution is celebrated and respected. At the city grounds where all the festivities take place, I freely walk around smoking my pipe (aromatic)...there is no restriction on doing so...I do get a lot of looks, because anyone smoking a cigarette shamefully huddles in the outer regions of the festivities.
I have gotten so many "That is such a pleasant smell" from what I can tell are predominately Mormon wives...breaking down stereotypes one woman at a time.
I carry a bottle that is more discreet though.
The founding fathers smoke and drank....just living up to their ideals.

Getting back to the Op:
I think that I would approach Turdflinger and the county commissioners and dare them to cite me under reasonable suspicion on partaking of snuff or chew.... Smokers ought to overwhelm them in numbers and expose the nonsense for what it is...let the cops harass smokers while violent criminals are ignored.... The primary duty of elected officials to protect the citizenry from real threats has been so bastardized, that it is time for people to take a stand.
Most people lack the will or inclination o do so.

I think that you should be able to smoke a pipe in a park. I guess I should try in the nature preserve next to my house. I appreciate not having to worry about stepping where someone just spat his wad of chewing tobacco in the grass. Not that was ever much of a problem in Houston.
