Friends, words are just "words". If you don't like them, don't read them, or make your case for the opposing opinion. It concerns me that there exists a culture that seems to want to censor free speech. Some seem to be offended by almost anything.

Hear, Hear, let's just go back to tolerance and not get all buzz faced about so called grievances, we all are different but we got a common thread, we love each other. Not taking warm showers with you'all. You hear!

You can say what you want and I will listen or not.

It seems that people have forgotten, or never learned, what freedom of speech means.

Today it seems not only are people thin skinned but are eagerly seeking an opportunity to jump on someone with the intent to destroy because of some idea different from theirs, a word used that they believe to show insensitivity, or it’s a chance to draw attention to their own self righteousness. Come on people, pull your heads from deep within your rectums and sniff the roses for awhile. You have been looking inward for so long that you’ve forgotten how beautiful the sunshine can be. Show some love and compassion for your fellow man and let him speak his mind and live without the rest of creation trying to mold him into their ideals. Get a life of your own and let others live their own lives. Give each the freedom to be and live free. AJ

Commendable...
Often aspired to, rarely achieved...
Free Speech for all - Much more easily preached than consistently practiced. I don't always tread as carefully or thoughtfully as I should, and that sometimes gets me tarred n feathered by even those that preach Free Speech. We all walk the thin ice of hypocrisy, yet we must still strive to practice our faith.

I agree with all 3 of you ( Dramatwist, Baboo, and AJ) We live in a time where people get butt hurt over everything that they do not agree with. It's gotten worse over the last 10 years. Everyone gets mad about everything and thinks they need to form a lynch mob of like minded folks. I dont understand why people think that their feelings should impact everyone else. If you dont like someone's thoughts or words, move along or give your opinion as well. There is no reason to have to censor yourself. Men and women have given their lives, and others have fought for that right. This does not apply to forums and online interactions only. Good judgement and respect for others goes a long way. Occasionally we all have a brain fart... we are humans after all.

Too many regrets stem from my all-too-big n free mouth that could have used a muzzle for the sake of all concerned. Free Speech is a lofty ideal, though I don't think was ever meant to be unbridled and wild.

I once worked for a man for 6 years. The first day he told me that were not going to agree on some things. He didn't care if I argued with him as long as I didn't make it personal. We argued strongly at times, but we worked things out and had a great working relationship...I don't agree with a lot of things my friends say but it doesn't effect our friendship.

Some people take offense if you do not agree with them...I have been married 38 years to a woman that I often disagree with...I certainly do not set the bar higher than that, with an online conversation. There is a right to free speech, but that doesn't mean that you have a right to be agreed with, or even that you have a right to be heard...that is why forums are moderated. Watching political discourse, be it on the floor of congress or by the political talking heads...them people are a piss poor example for one to pattern their conversations by, and what is acceptable behavior. I really see no problems here, I am pretty vocal about what I believe, but never with the intention to start any war with anyone...Old Billy, from years back said "to thine own self be true"...which I take to heart, also realizing that I do not need to share my opinion on everything either.
Common sense in conversation...pretty well in play on this forum.

Free Speech is a lofty ideal, though I don't think was ever meant to be unbridled and wild. common courtesy, consideration, and compromise go a long way. I will say some words can hurt feelings, you might know they're untrue, but they sting nonetheless. BUT, as for everyone's 5 minutes of fame from being "offended" at something, it's gone way too far. People get offended FOR other people nowadays. Then there's virtue signaling. That's some crap too.

I was at two car dealerships today, and walked away empty handed. I feel my offense to their words of "we can't go any lower" is well warranted. I am sincerely offended and angry.

To be fair (and pedantic), the doctrine of free speech celebrated in this country does not mean that everyone has to accept what they hear without offense, no matter what it is. Protected free speech only refers to the government censoring your speech (or expression). If an official of the government did not attempt to censor you, your free speech right has not been infringed just because someone didn't like what you said. Basically, they have just as much of a right to be offended by it as you have to say it in the first place. Freedom! I totally agree that many people go overboard with being offended. The only things that offend me personally are suggestions that others' freedoms should be infringed; so basically racism, sexism, and other discrimination (and I mean someone genuinely meaning it, not just saying something someone "interprets" that way). I'll argue against that all day. Well, and the logical side of me is offended by anyone passionately arguing a position that is refuted by evidence and data. If I have a "trigger", it is the flat earthers. Anyway, I'm just suggesting that a flip side to someone being free to say what they want is other people being free to feel however they want about that. We are, of course, also free to not care how others feel about it, which solves the problem nicely.

This subject always reminds me of the meme where someone asks another person "What are you outraged about today?" to which they reply "I don't know, they haven't told me yet". To which I can't help but think...

Free speech should be tolerated, even when uncomfortable, but it behooves us all to do it respectfully.

Words have a lot of power. Justin would have kicked my sorry arse out of here a long time ago if mine had any significance. Fortunately for me, he realized I was simply drunker than three monkeys and allowed me to skate.
