So in my city, there are a few cigar lounges that don't allow pipe smoking for various reasons. Has anyone tried to smoke a briar cigar in one of the establishments with success?

That's a great question... I'm wondering what the hassle is with even smoking a pipe there.
I suppose the question is, is a briar cigar a cigar or a pipe? What's the definition of a cigar?
You could wrap a tobacco leaf around it and nobody would know.

There are a few cigar lounges that carry no pipe tobacco, that serve alcohol here, and they treat me no differently than the other patrons...of course I am ordering drinks while there. Do the cigar lounges also prohibit cigarette smoking? Try Indian river tobacco shop. www.indianrivertobacco.com/Default.asp

Not sure about alcohol though, not that I need it. I do find it an interesting conversation while I am couped up inside on a this winter day. It has been crazy the last two weeks in Michigan. I think I'm ready for spring so I can sit on my deck comfortably. Not that I'm about skirting the law, but it sounds like many just simply "go for it" in these situations and smoke their pipe.

Its a state law in michigan. I don't know the details of it but when I visited nolans I couldn't enjoy my pipe in the lounge. I can at irtt though. I think itbhas something to do with the liquor licensing because nolans has a bar while irtt does not. Go to gun lake they dont bat an eye at pipe smokers.

Good question. When it was open, Briar Patch B&M in Fair Oaks California was in a strip mall. They had a cigar lounge and let me smoke a pipe in it. The only times I was there, though, it was pretty empty (early in the day). They didn't have alcohol, though.

Haven't had a problem in these parts. Had two of the B&M's owners almost force me to sit down and have a smoke.

I think if you purchase with the establishment it isn't a problem to light up but if you walk in the lounge with your own tobac or even your own cigar it is bad form. I just spent the evening with my tobacconist on pricing pipe tobac for the shop. Should be in the system tomorrow. Rattray's, Escudo, Capstan, the usual bulks and on the way is some Esoterica and F&T. Chalking this up for a big win for me and fellow pipe smokers in the area.

We don't have any over here, but I would see a cigar lounge as a place, attached to a cigar shop, where you can smoke the cigars (or pipe tobacco) purchased on the premises. Smoking a cigar that you bring in yourself is the equivalent of bringing your own six-pack into a bar, sitting at a table and drinking it all without buying anything, or bringing your own burger to McDonalds. But I'm looking at this whole topic from VERY FAR AWAY.

I've seen briar cigars at shows but I don't think I've ever seen one smoked. You don't want to the that guy.

Michigan state law allows for an establishment to get either a cigar smoking lounge or a smoking lounge exemption/license. When they wrote the law, they stupidly left pipes out of the cigar exemption. If you are a cigar lounge in Michigan you can serve alcohol and food but only smoking cigars is allowed. A smoking lounge allows cigars, pipes, and cigarettes but canβt serve food and drink. There are a couple places in the Detroit suburbs with the cigar exemption that when you walk in, it looks like any other bar and restaurant. There is a humidor in the back of the room. Casinos in Michigan have their own rules because the majority are First Nations owned and on sovereign tribal land.
