It was a talent with him. He was so good at it that people would find out how he done something and then turn it around when they done it themselves. He dug water wells on high ground, planted his seed just before a storm, built the smokehouse next to the bedroom, hired a drunkard to run his still, penned his hogs in a hollow that flooded each year, put lye-water on infected warts, and set fire to his own beard every time he lit his pipe.” Reading Burke’s Two For Texas and this paragraph stuck with me, lot of wisdom, main character is describing his father fo doing every thing wrong.

We've all had those days. I'm told that experience is a great teacher. It's just that some of us get left back a lot.

Experience can be a very tough teacher. I would much rather listen to a wise old sage, like my Dad, and learn from him. My problem, most of the time, is I didn’t listen, instead I attended the class taught by Experience. I could have saved myself many miseries and hardships had I listened to my Dad. After I reached age 35 or so I started listening to him and taking his advice. Life got a lot easier. I surely wish he was still here to offer his wisdom and care.

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put one in fruit salad.

I could write a very long book on how not to do things. I'm stubborn and apparently like to learn things the hard way.

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put one in fruit salad. What about tomato preserves? Wonderful on buttered toast. Methinks I am unwise.

I just eat tomato sandwiches with mayo and pepper until they go back to mealy and tasteless..

My son was one of the ones never to take advice...
After getting out of college he was offered a job as loadmaster in the AirForce, travel around the world, TDY pay... I told him to go for it.
He turned it down... a year later, he joined the Marines with no guarantees... he got a paid trip to Afghanistan and got a glimpse of hell.
He doesn’t regret that experience, but through it all figured out that dad knew what he was talking about... he does appreciate my advice now though.

I could write a very long book on how not to do things. I'm stubborn and apparently like to learn things the hard way. I would have to be the co-writer and I have the experience to back it up....I thank God that He loves me or I would be just a memory...and not a very good one.

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put one in fruit salad. When staying with friends in Mexico, I enjoyed several dishes that mixed tomatoes with fruit. Just not something that you see here, except for the occasional mango salsa.

I am one who has to learn the hard way. Never asked my father for advice and dismissed most of what he tried to tell me until the last 10 years. My 23 year old son is always looking for advice and will listen if I think he's about to do something dumb. I'm happy I have a close relationship with my son and wish my father and I were closer through the years. We were both at fault but were pretty close the last couple years before he passed.
