Great read, thanks for posting. Definitely brings back memories when walking through a park with my grandfather. Now, the scents and aroma of pipe tobacco burning is forever gone in those areas, and most other areas as well........so sad. I still have “ grandpa’s sweater “👍👍👍👍

Yes, great article, smells of days of yore, rember smells of sale barn, animals, manure, cigars, pipes, they roasted peanuts in there. You pulled off the side of the highway and took hat off even if you didn’t know them. Flash to my days at Exxon, mid 90s, going to main office, female engineer coming thru the door, I open it for her, she says ( I’ll open my own door) I slam it in her face and say you Damn right you will. I shed tears for days of old.

Great article, but I rolled my eyes when he looped pot in with crack. haha
It is sad in a way, but isn't it at least something that we can say those left are pipe smokers smoking for the love of pipe smoking? I feel like in its heyday, there were a lot of people just posing as it was considered trendy- Like people sagging their pants or in the 90s when every white woman got a tattoo of a sun, moon, or gecko on their ankle..
I'm sure pipe makers and those in the tobacco industry would like disagree with me. haha

Great article, Charlie. Loved it. I especially appreciated:
- "In those days, pipe smoke was a man's signature scent. It was the incense in the Church of Dad, a burnt offering to the god of domesticated masculinity, a symbol of benevolent paternalism."
- "And then there's the pop cultural image of a pipe and slippers in front of the fire with a good book and your dog at your feet."
Yes, it's still like that around here. You'll often find me basking in my "benevolent paternalism" with my "signature scent" out in my shop ... in the cold.
"My trusty dog is by my chair, in front of the fire", ... in the house.
But yes, there you'll find me, "the wise paternal figure who effortlessly solves all family problems while puffing calmly" ... out in the cold.
Yes, the dashing "rugged outdoorsman, canoeist, fly fisherman, and, and ... clipper ship captain ..."
Oh, well. You get the gist. Cold out here.

Incense in the church of Dad gave me a good chuckle too.
Reminds me of a line by JD from the country Squire. A crabby old church lady says “You know that your body is a temple!” Inferring that smoking defiled the temple...
“”Yeah, But in the temple, sacrificial offerings were constantly given up producing smoke therein”
For PhantomWolf from the article:

The statistics speak for themselves. I believe pipe smoking is continuously dying in a slow death spiral. What a pity! Another 20 - 30 years pipe smokers will be as rare as water in the Patagonian Desert.
The article summoned a host of memories about the pipe smokers that I encountered while on my journey to becoming a man. Charlie thanks for posting the article. I enjoyed it immensely.

That culture is not gone, it still exists within us. Though not ubiquitous anymore, we remember it and enjoy the memory when we smoke, whether it be in our office, or on the back porch, or with a humble cob as we do chores in the yard. You and I are living proof.

Half that dwindling minority must spend their time bidding on EBay.

Half that dwindling minority must spend their time bidding on EBay. Yep.
You're cracking a joke, but you're not wrong. The remaining pipe collectors have deep pockets, and they're watching eBay closely.

Incense in the church of Dad gave me a good chuckle too. Actually, that was just my attempt at levity. I thought the article gave a great description of the pipe smoking past that I am still living with a few exceptions of my own choosing.
