just read an article about a Millanial who hashed out a plan to make like he had a date to Outback and look sad when she didn’t show up hopping to get a free steak, his sister said she’d pay for it if he didn’t succeed. An older couple in their 60s finally paid for it. I’m at a lost for words at how vile that is.

Sadly, there are those who take advantage of good people in order to extend the free ride they think they are entitled to. Morality and honesty are not considered as positive attributes among this crowd and any kindness is perceived as weakness. Its a sad commentary on our society when these toads are held up as social heros among their peers and publicly brag about something that should bring nothing but shame. Live by the sword and die by the sword. Long after me and my generation are gone these people will only have themselves to deal with. That would be a sight worth seeing!

The only thing I would have offered this guy would have been my condolences and a hearty 'enjoy your dinner'.

I'm not understanding this. Why/how would being stood up for a date equal a free steak?

Despite being taken advantage of, kudos to that old couple for being so generous and compassionate.
There are truly lots of big-hearted people like that in all age groups.
I think, too often, we fail to focus on the positive people in these stories.

I'm not understanding this. Why/how would being stood up for a date equal a free steak? So a story and sometimes a picture gets posted online in hopes of it going "viral". Then people or even the restaurant would feel bad and do a good deed in order to look good themselves. Its just a new way of scamming society as some individuals do and have done for centuries.

Hrm, guess you're right. It would never have occurred to me to pay for the steak, whether the stood up person was male or female. Guess I'm just a cold-hearted bastard. 😁

I think, too often, we fail to focus on the positive people in these stories. These were my thoughts as well. What the guy did was wrong, but generalizing him into a whole age and using him as a representation of how they are is also wrong. (Not you Brad). Depending on who comes up with these generation groups, I fall into the millennial category. I am nothing like the person in the story. Just had to throw that out there.

If the date showed up who was going to pay ? First thing that crossed my mind!!! There was most likely no date, seems likely it’s a scam this guy has done prior, not his last either. Tonight he will be at a Lonestar Steakhouse near you! If I feel someone is down on their luck and can not afford a meal I’d be the first to make sure he or she ate well. But definitely not in this case.

There are plenty of old creeps out there as well as young ones. Being a low life is not confined to the millennial generation. What I see changing is the public perception toward these nitwits whether young or old. What would have been considered shocking not that many years ago is taken as a fine joke among some these days. Not all by any means, but a growing proportion. Age has nothing at all to do with it. There are good people in all age groups. Thankfully they still outnumber the bottom feeders.

Reminds me of how I used to dine and dash as a younger man, haha. Classy restaurants, you know.
You'd be surprised how many chicks were down for it. I only did it a few times, but it was exhilarating.

We were all kinds of mixed up teenagers back then. Some of my friends spiraled into despair with drugs/the drink. A few guys went to prison. But really it was mostly just senselessness. We got over it as we got older.

So I went back in, got him some more food and a bag of dog food for his best friend. He cried. I cried a little too. Now, taking advantage of others kindness/sympathy is definitely something I frown upon. I believe the guy in this story needs a boot in his arse.

You know, those guys who push their way into peoples faces and make them so uncomfortable they just have to cough up some change. Grabbing shoulders, all of it. Its basically a milder form of burglary. Some of those people do look like they can do some damage too. There's nothing wrong with asking for a helping hand. But those aggressive guys usually have some sort of ulterior motive, other than just food in my experience.

He was just a man that lived in the woods. He didnt bother anyone or beg for food. Most of the time if he was out of the woods he was asking if he could work to make some money. He lived there for years. They cleaned out the woods a few months ago and I have no idea what happened to him or his dog

He seems like a nicer person. There's a lot of aggressive panhandlers in cities like Philly, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Chicago, etc.

We have those too, generally they're at the red lights by the liquor store, or stop signs by the trap houses.
Original topic has me thinking... my oldest son turns 16 Sunday, if I found out he did something like that there would be hell to pay. But it would also make me think that I failed as a parent. So I wonder how proud this guy's parents are?

Everybody needs help sometime or other, one time in Winn Dixie I was waiting to check out and young woman with a baby and three kids ahead of me was putting back pampers because she didn't have enough money , kept the food items. I told her keep them and wait here, I told check out girl wait, I went on aisle and got a big arm full of pampers, brought them back and paid for them. She reminded me of my daughter. That other Dude needed his arse kicked severly.

I don't really understand what the scam is. A guy walks into a restaurant and sits down...that's all anybody sees. How would anyone know that somebody else didn't show up ? Why would somebody think to buy him a steak? People eat alone all the time.....Where's the sister when all this is going on ? After the guy eats the steak and his stomach is full he should go to the Chevy dealer and sit there and maybe someone will buy him a new car........

I only did it a few times, but it was exhilarating. My brother used to do it at Hungry Hunter restaurants with his then girlfriend...they pulled it off several times except for once. My brother got out the door, and they nabbed her. They made her sit in the lobby, and they loudly mentioned what she had done to everyone that came and went... they told her she was free to leave anytime she wanted to but it would only be with a police officer assisting. My brother returned later with cash, and they charged him double... and he had consumed a lot of pricey drinks, lobster and prime rib, etc. They never did it again.

It was probably fake or staged for one of those youtube channels or something. Sounds like a joke that didn't turn out as expected.

Probably the ultimate dine-n-dasher was Hunter S. Thompson himself, when he fled the hotel he checked into for the big race in Fear and Loathing. Of course, he checked into the hotel under a fictitious name.
“The decision to flee came suddenly. Or maybe not. Maybe I’d planned it all along –subconsciously waiting for the right moment. The bill was a factor, I think. Because I had no money to pay it. And no more of these devilish credit-card/reimbursement deals.”
His bill was something like ten grand, and we're talking early 70s here.

My millennial daughter in law was at Walmart last week and footed the bill for a financially distressed mom at the checkout. I don't want to give all the details, but suffice to say, the women wasn't trying to scan anyone. Our daughter in law saw her predicament and paid the $50 total. We love that girl.
