Let this redneck attest. I've gotten my card info stolen twice. Both times it was because of one of these. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson the first time. Guess not.

That was a big deal when I lived in Missouri, tamper resistant tape solved that problem for the most part.

I don't know about gas pumps, but a few years ago my credit got hacked to the tune of $20,000.00 plus. Strange days indeed... most peculiar, mama...

yepper, I usually gas up at the Rez stores 15mins from home. They fine as employees pump the gas. I always pay cash no matter where, even if on the "rare" road. If not enuf in pocket, ATM at local bank safe. If on the road, travelers checks or cash
Great post Charlie, hope all do the same if possible

The key is just to use a credit card, never a debit card. Fraudulent charges on a credit card are the issuing bank's problem, not yours... you just have the inconvenience of having your card cancelled and a new one issued.
If someone scams your debit card though, that money actually leaves your bank account. Depending on your bank you'll probably get it back eventually, but that's a whole different situation!

wow, I never knew that. I know people can scan your card details etc. I use an RFID secure wallet. But I never knew that about the pay-at-pump machines!

In Canada, bank cards overtook cash transactions about 15 years ago. We had our experiences with skimmers, but they're pretty much nonexistent now. We moved to chip cards years ago, so I don't remember the last time I swiped the magnetic strip. Much harder to counterfeit. Now, almost everyone here has advanced to contactless credit card and debit card transactions. Super quick (just tap your card), secure, and if there are any frauds, the bank sucks up the loss. Only downside is that tap transactions are usually capped at $100. More than that, and you need to enter your PIN. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contactless_payment

That happened to me a few years ago. Both debit cards on two bank accounts. I was really hurting. It took five weeks for the money to be returned to my bank accounts. Good advice about using credit cards, only. This past week, I got a call from my bank alerting me that Walmart had one of their check-out scanners compromised and was verifying my card debit card activity.
