My wife as let me have a section of the yard to try to grow tobacco. It's not a lot of space about 60 sqft. But I do not have a clue, the last thing I grew was tomatoes for my daughters science project. So I have found a few books online but I don't know enough to know which would be a good starter. So any guidance/suggestions/mentorship would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't have a clue, I am totally clueless. Hope someone else can help you.

Been doing a bit of research on the topic. I might have to try a few plants this year.

For your first grow, I'd recommend varieties that air-cure easily … less fuss at first.

Having grown Marijuana and tomatoes, I'm reasonably sure the horticulture is similar... right amount of sunlight, water, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Nitrogen might be the most important, as you are growing for leaf.

Suggestions? I was looking at Bright-Leaf Virginia and TN-Burley.

Join a tobacco growing forum such as fairtradetobbaco. As for varieties, do not grow any Virginias unless you build a flu curing chamber. Without a chamber your Virginia will not retain its sugars.
There's plenty of Turkish, Burley and even Semois seeds out there.
I see you are in NM. Growing should not be an issue but with you very low humidity, curing might be tricky. There are plenty of guys on fairtradetobacco that grow in similar environments and do just fine.. just got to know the tricks for curing in low humidity area.. as a matter of fact, Darin is from Arizona so he can probably help you. I grow in the mid-Atlantic area where everything for growing tobacco is perfect.. sun, rain, humidity!
Good luck... it really is pretty easy
Edit: Just realized that you could always sun cure any Virginia that you grow.

Suggestions? I was looking at Bright-Leaf Virginia and TN-Burley. I like Virginia Brightleaf. Virginia Gold is another nice one. As for Burley, a popular one is TN90. There are also plenty of heirloom varieties out there. I highly recommend Semois too. Check out Northwest seeds....... nwtseeds.com/seed_list.htm

Dunno where you are in New Mexico but may not be the right weather/soil. How much are you growing?

jitterbugdude … I hoped you would catch this thread!
In my PM to Eric, I recommended checking out FTT Forums for TONS of growing info. It's free to read and you don't have to join.
One of the air-cured Burley varieties I would recommend is Yellow Twist Bud … tasty stuff! Also, Turkish varieties such as Prilep will air / sun-cure and are also good to have for blending.
Edit: +1 to this ... Check out Northwest seeds....... nwtseeds.com/seed_list.htm

I'm no use here except to say that Darin and jitterbugdude know what they're taking about... But I'm sure you've gathered that by now.
