On the recommendation of our esteemed patcher collegue, mr. smellthehatfirst, i bought some Orlik Dark strong Kentucky. I'm always open to finding a companion to HH ODF. OPening the tin provides a pleasant aroma of virginia tobacco, an obviously well made quality tobacco and, uh oh, licorice. I rubbed it out a bit, let it dry and stuffed one of my stacks with it. Lit up nicely, first couple of puffs pleasant but light in flavor. Sure enough, as I feared, the licorice is the dominant flavor, with a supprting note of virginia and honey. I noticed virtually no solid DFK notes, let alone dominance. I would say this is a cased pleasant Virginia with some DFK undertones, not a Dark Fired concerto. Bear in mind, this is high praise from me, since I'm not a lover of Va predominant blends. It's a medium, mild VIrginia, not a Dark Strong Kentucky IMO. To paraphrase some literary critic, I would say, "for those that like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they would like."

Maybe you should try MacBarren Bold Kentucky...a good taste with plenty of nic. Worth a shot.

I like it. Put off trying it for a long time, assuming it would be too strong for my liking. Not the case fortunately. While no whimp, it won't give you the spins. Good tasting in that manner that has you returning for more.

Same here … neither strong nor Dark Fired in nature.
Peter Heinrichs Dark Strong Flake is another for those who want a similar taste to Orlik's DSK.

It's one of my favorites. I have it cellared really well. I get more of a molasses taste than a licorice.

To paraphrase some literary critic, I would say, "for those that like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they would like." There's a ton of Kentucky in there. It may not be the type of Kentucky you're looking for, but it's a major factor. Perhaps obviously, the modern Kentucky integrated into Orlik DSK is not going to taste the same as the ancient hogsheads found in HH ODF. Not least, that licorice casing is a signature flavor in American tobacco. It's core to every old-time chewing/smoking tobacco. Licorice paste is as core to Burley and Kentucky as sugar or honey casings are in a Virginia blend.
I think it's no secret that I'm quite fond of Orlik DSK. HH ODF is also an excellent blend, but I am much more likely to crack a tin of DSK than ODF.

To put it another way, Orlik DSK almost has too much Kentucky for me to bear. It is quite assertive!
I am plainly not ready for the proverbial Kentucky Concerto.

Dark Strong Flake is good. I was lucky enough to pick up a tin a few months back. It never stays in stock very long.

I am plainly not ready for the proverbial Kentucky Concerto. Ah well, my taste buds probably require the assertive blends. No doubt why my current mainstays are Engine 99 and HH ODF. Maybe a function of smoking Balkan Sobranie 759 for 20 years. However, I do have my limits. I find some of the GH DFK blends too mighty.
