I was just noticing that my STG and Sutliff pipe tobaccos seem to simply "stay good" longer than my other labels.
Do STG and Sutliff use proplyene glycol or some other humectant thesedays in all their blends? What exactly is used?
What other household tobacco names do this?? What do they use?

Kosher PG. I use it to wipe out the sides of tobacco jars and bags. I use a few drops to rehydrate. Used carefully, you can't taste it and it helps freshness

I may try to rescue a few this way.

Being that PG is a fairly thin liquid, you may have luck spritzing with it. Although, my success with spritzing with distilled water has been, well, successful. Lay out tobacco on a cookie sheet, spritz, mix it up, do it again another two times, and then pack it away for a few days. Check to see if it's at the moisture level you want. If not, repeat procedure. I've done this with loose and flake. Flakes, I just spritz once, and put it back in the jar. No mold issues so far.

I don't care for PG on my tobacco … chemical taste and more "bite" to the burn.

I can't abide PG or other humectants. Any rehydration I do (very little) is done via a shard of terra cotta wetted and placed in a jar.

They all do. Grow your own is the only method to know your smoke is truly organic.

They all contain humectants? They are all sporting some casing(s) or other, but I am surprised to hear they all contain PG or another humectant.
And is this statement true?: All humectants are casings, but not all casings are humectants.

If you are enjoying an aromatic blend, you are most definitely getting some propylene glycol with your bowl. PG isnt just used as a humectant, it is also used as a carrier for flavorings and aromas.

Perhaps you know more?

I don't know if there are additives like this in tobaccos, but I certainly will not add anything. I transfer my tobaccos to mason jars and I've never had mold problems. I do live in a fairly dry climate so I don't know if that has something to do with it.

Makes total sense. 10 Furlongs wrote: Only this: people sometimes conflate casings and toppings, including me, and perhaps here. I'd guess that humectants could be both a casing and a topping, though probably not on the same leaf at the same time. I'd guess that casings could contain flavorings, but that most are added as a topping, with PG as the most likely carrier. Now, someone who knows this stuff for sure is most welcome to set us straight. Pretty please!!

I have noticed that C&D blends have some other type of preservative on them that I am sensitive to. I can't make it through half a bowl without developing a terrible headache on any blend from them (GL Pease, Briarworks, etc). Am I the only one that has this issue? I spoke with Jeremy Reeves about it a while back and he suggested it might be sensitivity the nicotine in the blends, but if that were the case, I would think that ALL higher nicotine blends would have the same effect on me. I can smoke bowl after bowl of burley blends or dark fired Kentucky blends and not have any reaction, but a little bit of Gaslight or Blockade Runner and I am in rough shape.

Propylene Glycol is used in virtually all pipe tobaccos. They vary considerably in amount, but there's almost always some.
It's both a humectant and a potent anti-molding agent.
If you google around, the Czech government has published industry filings for all blends available for sale in Czechia.
Some of the results may surprise you.
Rattray's has several non-aromatic blends that are 3% or more PG by weight!
